My prediction for 2020 is that there will be entire tables of Aaron Judge $1 cards for sale.

You may see that by next month. His average has dropped nearly 50 points from its mid June peak. And 30 points since the All Star game.

The guy is a talented kid, but the idea that he is in a deep slump now is kind of ridiculous. He never hit in the minor leagues anything like he did the first half of the season. Maybe this is his normal. Yankee fans had a bronze plaque already being worked on. As usual a little ahead of themselves.

Who or what is aaron judge? And who cares?
And as for AC in 2020, sounds like another probable break in going to the National for me.

Atlantic City! Hooray! I am in Philadelphia about an 1.5 hours away so I am very happy. I will surely be going more than 1 day this time.

I heard there was a dealer petition to not go back to Atlantic City. I wonder if there will be several dealers taking a break.

This.

It's like the powers that be telling me to take a summer off, save some money, and spend a nice, quiet weekend with the family. Not a bad thing, actually.

Correct me if I am wrong....Derek Jeter will most likely be inducted into the HOF in 2020.

Cooperstown is already predicting 100,000+ will be there in 2020 for this event.

The HOF date is usually set for the last weekend of July.

Whoever set the National date for the weekend of July 29 thru August 2 is not too smart.

For most of the 1980's and 1990's, the National has been scheduled the week following the HOF weekend. In recent years (including this year),
the National has conflicted with the HOF weekend in Cooperstown.

In my opinion, this is really dumb scheduling. As, I have set-up at the Cooperstown BB card Show since 1986. Obviously, I missed it this year.

In any event, it's my problem. Does anyone else here feel that the National scheduling dudes should take into consideration the HOF event ?

If the powers to be insist on having the National late July-early August they are going to conflict with either Cooperstown or Canton. I guess they figure it hurts the bottom line less conflicting with the BB HOF Induction.

To defend the National promoters and their scheduling issues, in reality they have about a 4-6 week period to run the show depending on how July 4th falls.

I know in Texas, we begin school on August 21st or so which is and was a shock to me who never began school in the NY area until after Labor Day.

So using that, we have about a 6 week period in which the show can be run to deal with school issues.

And then dealing with what various venues have available and does it fit the National's needs, does limit them quite a bit.

So, there are going to be conflicts no matter what anyone does and that decision on where and when is something above our pay grade.

Personally, there are three areas I think have been ideal for the National: Anaheim, Chicago and Baltimore. Another possibility is St. Louis

All 3 have tons of hotel rooms near the show, All 3 have accessible transportation to and from and All 3 have enough things to do in the area to make the social events fun. If we just rotated between these three areas, I'd be a happy man. (of course, I'd be happier if we did not have hard concrete floors but that is another issue)

Regards
Rich

Fixed that for you. It was smooth for me last year although that airport terminal is smaller than the show entrance area in Chicago.

This is true, the petition came around to where I was with only a couple signatures.

I also talked to someone who said they talked to a National person regarding locations and was told that the Rock Showplace Convention Center in the suburbs of Detroit is 50k sq. ft. too small, and that St. Louis had too much crime in the area of their center, FWIW.

Ditto. Loved Chicago. Not sure about Cleveland. Pretty much no go in AC. Whose doing the bidding for NSCC. this is a poor decision IMO. I know there are tons of dealers in NJ, but for us west coasters, it's not desirable.

I agree with you 100% Ted. I've been going to Cooperstown induction weekend for close to 20 years. Last year was my first National and I loved it. But if they are on the same week I will be going to Cooperstown. It's just stupid. In fact Dale Murphy actually commented to me last Saturday about the scheduling as he signed a piece for me because Reggie Jackson is also on it and he wasn't in Cooperstown but at the National.

My opinion about Atlantic City:

Not as good as Chicago or Baltimore, better than Cleveland.

Plus it's nice to be the "home team" once in a while. I'll take it.

There will always be locations that are convenient for some, and not for others. But for Gosh Sake, pick a "Hub City" or at least a place that most people can get to on a direct flight. Or stop calling it "THE NATIONAL"

Very disappointing to those not living specifically in the NE... I'll be taking 2020 off as well.

Atlantic City?

Shit. That last show sucked in every possible way: inconvenient travel, bad accommodations, lousy venue. One of our members got bedbugs in the hotel (Caesars). But at least it was expensive. And at the rate they are closing there may not even be any casinos left in town.

Looks like I will have to spend my summer vacation with my family. Thanks a lot, NSCC...Maybe I'll go to the boxing HOF induction and show in early June instead.

Yeah, AC is a two hour drive from the largest population center in the US. Simply impossible to get to.

Exactly. A 2 hr drive. You can understand how that's not convenient for anyone who has to first board a plane to get to The East Coast.

If the National were in any one of the East's great cities serviced by a major airport, I bet no one would gripe.

If it was in New York City plenty of people would gripe just as loud. I'm sure of it.

The board has been full of stories about people driving to this years National. Sure many people from the Midwest drove long distances to get there.

Philadelphia is a fairly large airport and that's 40 minutes closer than NY. People fly into Philly every day to gamble in Atlantic City.

My understanding is the dealers vote for the locations, so they idea that Atlantic City is boycotted by large numbers of people obviously makes no sense. Sure the leading auction houses in the business, many of which are based in NJ or have offices in NYC, are pretty happy.

One hour from Philly. Not great but better than two+ from NYC.

I've never thought about flying into Atlantic city and didn't understand what all the fuss was about. Out of curiosity I just looked into flights out of OC or LA. Looks like the best option is a flight into Philly, followed by a 75 mile drive. Beyond ridiculous for a national convention many people fly in for in my opinion. I doubt I will be going to that one, unless we make a trip out of it to see some friends or family in the NYC or DC area.

This was actually what doomed AC as an experiment from the start. People like to blame the expansion of gambling, the internet and a million other things, but if the casino owners had ever had an OUNCE of foresight they could've turned AC into Vegas with a beach by banding together and building a true international airport in the 1970's. This shortsightedness will continue to be the thorn in the side of EVER turning AC into what it should've been, and now it's probably too late.

I was at the Cooperstown Card show. Did some wheeling and dealing. Prices were better than the shops for sure. A lot of good peeps in there. Plus the weather was mild so it didn't feel like an oven in there this year!

I'd love to see Pittsburgh have it. Large beautiful convention center in a great location, downtown on the river, in the heart of everything. Seems like that would be a fun location that would offer everything people want.

In general, I wonder what the monetary tipping point is for collectors. Let's say The National is in a city far away and you decide to get flights and a hotel, etc. For the sake of argument, let's just say your total costs for the trip will be $1,500 and it doesn't put a strain on your finances. You can afford it. When do you look in the mirror and say to yourself, "You know, if I stay home, I can take that 1,500 bucks and use it to buy a seriously nice card instead. I ain't going!!!"???

I enjoyed the 2016 National (my first one).

Only a 90 minute drive for me.

I'll be there (God willing, of course).

Stephen, was there Saturday. Great show and one of my highlights of the year.

Rosemont's about a 50 minute drive for me, since I'm not a hard core collector, I'll simply wait until it swings back around. I agree, save the airfare and hotel and put it towards collectables or cards.

I refuse to go back to AC. The National last year just didn't have "it" and the area doesn't offer much that interests me. Looks like I'll just wait until it comes back to Cleveland every couple of years.

Great! If I'm alive, I'll be there. AC is convenient for me. Had a great time there.
