Default 1940's Christian testimonial card/blotter- 1940's

Posted By: leon

Hey Folks,
Just checking to see if anyone knows an exact year for this card/blotter? I know Dick Siebert played for the AL A's from late '38 to '45. I have it listed as a 1940's card....it's about 3"x6"...regards

I don't know anything about the card, but it looks like the quarter was minted in Denver...

and thanks for sharing it. For those who don't know, Dick Siebert is one of the greatest college coaches of all time and a Minnesota legend. He coached the Gophers for more than 30 years, winning more than 700 games and 3 National Championships. He coached Winfield and Molitor. Many credit (or discredit) him for bringing the aluminum bat and the DH to college baseball. The "Chief" was a great teacher. His presence on a Christian tribute card is not surprising--he was originally in the seminary before getting into pro ball.

That looks like something the player had printed up to give out to people to try to get them to live more spiritual lives. It's kind of a religious calling card.

First time I have seen this card. Does anyone know if there are other
ballplayers depicted on similar type cards ?

In 1962 the American Tract Society issue four cards with a Christian
Testimonial message printed on the backs of these cards. The players
in this set are Bobby Richardson, Jerry Kindall, Felipe Alou, and Al
Worthington. The fronts of these cards portraying these players are a
very high quality photographic process not previously achieved in BB
card production.

Advertising blotters in general were common, and I'm sure there are a number of old blotters around picturing baseball players. I've not seen Leon's before. I wouldn't be suprised if there are collectors who specialize in blotters.

I once had an old baseball instructional booklet co-written by Seibert when he was coach at Minnesota. I think it was a guide for gym teachers.

Leon,
I have had a half dozen baseball related ink blotters like the one in your post. Although, mine have been in the same era they have been mainly complete teams hence Reds, Indians. I have had a few that have a individual player like yours only advertising a product of some sort ie... Life Insurance, Bank, etc... Hope this helps. I like the ink blots on the reverse of yours though. Good post.
