Real...Deal or Fake...Mistake
Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
A little over a week back, this auction ran on ebay. I didn't want to out it while it was running, but I was curious as to what everyone else's opinion on this item might be? Being that I have never heard of a smaller size Plow Boy Tobacco Cabinet, I stayed away from bidding on this item. |

Sure looks legit to me but I admit to never having heard of the smaller size. I've owned several large ones over the years. |

The staining around the entire periphery is kinda unusual. Hevan't seen that before. The worn 'gray' border showing bright white beneath is kinda whacky too. |

My vote is real with poor photo. The back looks pretty good. If I would have seen it before it closed I would have asked for better photo.. |

There is a reprint set of these that measures 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 and which contains all the information shown on the back of the card, i.e, Spaulding & Merrick, etc. The cards say Reprint 1992 on the bottom right rear where this card shows unusual wear. |

It's a Fritsch reprint (http://www.fritschcards.com/reprints/1901_1910/1910plowboy.html) that some enterprising soul has manipulated to look 'old'. Most of the Fritsch cards don't state that they're reprints, but the size, in this case, is a dead giveaway. It seems that T3's and T204's get the most tries as legitimate cards. The T3's are also small and the T204's look awful, so they're not hard to spot. |

This was the item that I alluded to in the thread about whether or not we should have threads about fakes while the auctions are going on. I'm about 99% positive that this is from the Fritsch reprint series. |

I tried to contact the winning bidder with a link to the Fritsch cards but ebay, in its wisdom, now protects the seller of a fake card instead of the innocent buyer of the card by blocking transmissions from a 3rd party. Ain't ebay great? |
