Default Insane price for Coveleski

I know Coveleski doesn't have very many cards, and his cards have become popular lately, but this is beyond ridiculous.

This is exactly what I was talking about in an earlier thread about 1920's Carmel card prices lately. The prices they have ended up going for are out of this world. Grover Alexander for $330, Sisler for $300+. And now Coveleski for $450? The cards are going for over 4 Times they would have gone for just a few years ago. Granted I always felt the 20's caramel cards where under priced but what’s going on?

I am just now getting back into the hobby after a several year hiatus, and thought I missed something when I started seeing these prices. But, evidently I'm not alone.

It looks like Hal thought it was his RC.... THe Exhibit is the same year, the Minor League cards don't count (Zeenuts) and the strip cards kind of suck (can I say that ??) Also, these cards don't pop up much.

At one time the E121-120 Coveleski like the E121-120 Ross Youngs were the earliest cards that could be graded by PSA, so they brought higher prices in mid to high grade from top Rookie collectors. Now days strip cards are being graded so the prices should have dropped on the Coveleski at least. But I guess not. The nicer Coveleski and Youngs have gone for 2-4X book for a few years now, but this is a bit high on this one. Frank

Hey... I already own one of those cards...

so I was just bidding high to drive the market price up!!!

Brian is right:

Minor League cards don't count.
Strip cards don't count.
Exhibits don't count.

But those are just MY rules. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Obviously someone sniped even CRAZIER than I did on the card... so he must also be working under my set of "rules."

He's a nice guy who collects rookie HOF cards and other rookie cards as well.

I don't know if he reads our site or not, but I know his real name and don't feel comfortable publicizing it if he doesn't want anyone to know.

If he keeps sniping me... I may have to change my mind about him being such a nice guy! (just kidding)

I scanned (what is cataloged as) a 1928 W502 of Coveleskie and put it along side the picture of the 1921 E121 card of Coveleskie. The W502 is actually about 75% the length of the E121 and about the same width wise.

It almost looks as if they were the same picture. The E121 has a team designation across the chest while the W502 does not. In 1927 he was with Washington and he finished his career in 1928 with the Yankees.

I suppose he could have posed similarly for two different pictures but if you look closely they really look the same.

What's the point? I don't know, I thought it was just interesting:

Interesting Dred!

Definitley the same picture, background and all...

but I didn't know they had "photoshop" capabilities back then!!!

Maybe David Rudd can explain to us how they "erased" team names from a jersey in a photo back then?

Printers have been able to add/change/delete team names on uniforms for a long time. It was done much earlier than the 1920's. The Mayo's are a great example. Both Ewing cards are the same pose, with a different team name on the shirt. I just realized that the Kid Nichols photo was actually taken while he was still on the minor league Omaha team. Boston was later added to his uniform.

Isn't this the same Covaleski from the 1910 E93 Standard Caramel set?

They are different covaleskis. Stan Covaleski had his first full season in 1916 with Cleveland (he is pictured in the e121 and played until 1928). Harry Covaleski played from 1907-18.
