Default Affordable Wagner?

Posted By: Paul Carek

Howdy. I'm looking to purchase what will be my first Wagner in the not too distant future, and am wondering which of his cards I can realistically hope to find in decent condition, and at a relatively affordable price. I seem to remember a post a little while back for a Polo Grounds Game card (PSA 6 or 7, I think) of Honus for $500. Any other issues I should look into?

Thanks for your help.

1940 Playball is affordable, unless you want one from when he was playing.

and it's still pre-war - you can find graded examples on Ebay for WAY less than 500 - that's the Wagner I've been eyeballing - I have a Honus Autograph and want a card to go along with it and this issue seems to be the most affordable - granted he's older in the picture than in his playing days, but still a great card -

E91 would probably be one of the most affordable, if you don't mind the looks of the cards in the set.

You could definitely grab a Colgan's Wagner in up to VG condition for under $500.

The game cards can be had for $200-$500 all the time too.

1913 WG6 and WG5
or 1914 WG4

1914 WG4 Wagner (love the "butcher boy" stance)

Sporting News (likely ad piece?)

I'm pretty sure that we've got a sporting news Wagner (M116?) blue background with a blank back ... the only catch is that since it's thicker paper stock than all other card issues of that series it was almost certainly cut from a display/ad piece or some other promotional material back then. On the plus side it looks exactly like the blue background card and it will be priced in the hundreds not thousands We've owned it for the past 20 years...kinda crazy what you accumulate after collecting for so long.

If you're interested feel free to shoot me a line scottglevy@yahoo.com

Scott,

I've owned a several of those uncut m116 ad display cards and have quite a few, both cut and uncut, displayed on my website. They're pretty unique items and not ones you see too often. They're about 3 times as thick as a normal m116 and printed on heavy cardboard, which was most likely a part of a larger advertising sheet or a box at one time.

Decent Photo and would look good mounted with an autograph. If I wanted a older card -- I'd probably look at the 40 Play Ball --- not from playing career -- but certainly pre-war and easy enough to locate

I think the best affordable Wagner from his playing days is a Colgan's Chip. Great image & a popular set that is affordable by comparison.
