Default real or fake Mantles?

Posted By: Anonymous

I am thinking of buying these two cards and am looking for an opinion as to their authenticity. The owner of the cards sent me these scans, and they look real to me, but would like the opinion of people who might know better than I. Thanks for any help/advice you can lend.

This guy was laughingly discussed either here or on the PSA board. Don't even think of it.

Why would anyone with no hobby history sell a raw Mantle on eBay without getting it authenticated? Oh I bet his Law School wife doesn't want him to. PUHLEEZE.

The big question is what's a 'pant'? Does that just have one leg?

Seriously, 1952 Topps Mantles are one of those cards that collectors should avoid buying raw online, unless it's from a known and reputable seller. Same goes for 1933 Goudey Ruths and Cracker Jacks Joe Jacksons. Too many scams involving these cards to buy raw from unknown sellers. This includes trimming, not just reprints.

Is the guy offering the pair at a 'volume discount?'

Kinda funny that this seller places the dated receipt next to the scans of the Mantles. So what if that proves he has them in his possession. That doesn't prove that they are genuine and they certainly do look like reprints. Stay away!

......there's too much RED around! Skin color--I know they didn't have sun bloc in those days, but jeez, if he were that red, he couldn't play. Borders are pinkish (especially one), and one back.

Is the receipt for a size comparison--how do we know how big the receipt is (exactly). I don't understand.

Wow! 2 Mantles. They'll look good next to the 2 T206 Wagners up on the bay now.

I've heard this link is pretty accurate on identifying counterfeit Mantles, but have never owned one myself -- so I can't truly testify.

Comparing the scans from the auction to those available at the site you directed me to just made me more confused about this auction. After being outbid I had convinced myself that the cards must be fakes or reprints. However after looking at the site I was directed to I am leaning more to that they might be genuine Mantles. Of course without having the cards in my possession I cannot do the testing for opaqueness or magnifying the card to check for solid rather than half tone printing. The images themselves are Var. A of the Mantle and have none of the obvious counterfeit flaws.....I guess I'll never know for sure.
