especially for HOF'ers what do you think the premium in price is for a soverign back on a t206 compared to a regular back(ie sweet caporal). signed Greg

In my last auction I had numerous HOfers including Cobb, Young, and Matty, with Sovereign backs, and while all did well I didn't sense that much of a premium. I think collectors focussed more on the players, less on the Sovereigns. Next to Piedmont and Sweet Cap, it might be the easiest back, or close to it.

I think Barry S. is on target about the lack of much of a premium for
the Sovereign. With respect to the ordering.....
I do think that the Polar Bear is a bit more common than the Sovereign,
particularly the 460---also, a bit more common than the 350---but,probably about equal to the 150, with the 150 winning by a hair in the scarcity department.

all the best,

barry

I would say that Sovereign typically commands a slight premium over Piedmont and Sweet Caporal; perhaps 10% for Sovereign 150 and 350 and 20% for Sovereign 460. I know that all other things being equal I would prefer any Sovereign back to a Piedmont (except Factory 42) and would be willing to pay a little more for it.

I've bought T206 lots many times in the past, usually a good
percentage of Sovereigns, from the US midwest a lot in 1980
would typically have at least 20% Sovereigns in a 100 card lot.
Usaully a good mix of 150s, 350s, 460 series.

460 series are more difficult now, they carry a small premium
in value.

Lots I purchased from the US midwest would also typically have
about 10% Polar Bear. My Cobb Bat Off was also a Polar Bear back.

Scot is probably right about the 10% premium, but it's hard to gauge in an auction. If I got $550 for a Mathewson because of the Sovereign, would I have only gotten $500 without it? I have no idea.

I'll add my "one penny" in on this, for whatever it's worth.

Since I am trying to complete an all Sovereign set, I can tell you that these backs
are going for more than a 10% premium....at least on ebay.

I have been outbid on common T206's with Sovereign backs....across all 3 series....
considerably above what I thought they were worth. I cannot explain this, however.

i agree with Ted...

i am trying to put together the best collection of different brand backs i can...and sovereign definitely commands more than a 10% premium...closer to 30%...

honestly, the backs are fire, and to get any mid-high grade brand other than P or SC, will cost you.

Hi Ted,
It's your own fault for starting the Sovereign thread..... Have a great weekend.

Be well Brian

PS I haven't bid on any Sovereign's since you started your set, because I didn't want to cost you any cash.

I appreciate your abstaining from bidding on Sovereign's and I reciprocate by not bidding on
Carolina Brights.

However, there are some "dufusses", or is it "dufi", that have been jacking-up the bidding on
these cards to crazy prices....and I'm referring to Vg (or less) cards, I just don't understand

Here is some statistical data on T206 Sovereign cards that I've recently noted.......

Typical T206 Ebay listing will have, at any given week, only 2% of total that are Sovereign's.
Example....currently there are 811 - T206's listed and only 18 of them have Sovereign backs.

Two dealer inventories....1st - 220 cards yielded only 5 Sovereign's....2nd - 400+ cards had
only 7 Sovereign's.

A recent T206 collection of 84 cards that I acquired had only 2 Sovereign's.

They are tougher than most think....especially the 460 Series cards.

Hi Ted,
You are my hero.... using the term "Dufi", it's one of my favorites, and I completely agree. I guess we have to many lurkers reading the board, but at least your Sovereign set will be more valuable. Be well Brian

PS Thanks for staying away from the CB's, but I can't get anyone else to...

sovereigns definitely command premiums (like most backs other than P & SC)...

darren- you said "even polar bears"...i have purchased a few mid-high grade examples, and they get pretty expensive in 4,5,6's...
