Default How to end the T205 madness

Posted By: TBob

An easy way to end the high prices for high grade T205s is to send them in to SGC for geading. They will all come back SGC 60s and 50s with some 40s thrown in. That ought to put a damper on things for a while.
Seriously, SGC is brutal on T205s and E cards for some reason.

here are a couple of vintage cards I just received back from SGC. Very pleased with the grades on all the cards I sent, still have some confusion as to the grading of T202's but I did get one NM 84 & an 80.

this is inconsistent with other t205's they've graded. I haven't seen any with minor corner chipping get NM's. But is it a fair grade?

"84 NRMT 7: 70/30 or better centering, slight wear on some corners, minor scratching, some print spots or speckling, and print lines or refractor lines are acceptable. Card may exhibit a slightly skewed (diamond) cut."

"80 EX/NM 6: 75/25 or better centering, slight fuzzing of corners may be evident, skewed cut may be more evident, focus or register may be off, and slight notching of edges may exist."

I would personally characterize the corners as having something more than "slight wear".

I don't know. On initial inspection, it looked like it was graded more liberal than other T205 SGC cards that I have seen. However, I would say that the corners are better on this card than the SGC 84 Ty Cobb that BMW recently sold:

The corners on the Thomas card look better than the following SGC 70's:

however, I would have expected an SGC 80, from what I can see in the scan.

Can anyone give me a brief explanation as to what the grading standards are for Old Judge cards and the "fading" of the image on the card? I was never very clear on how any of the graded companies assessed such "wear", but some cards seem to have a mich higher degree of clarity than others. Any help is appreciated.

With all due respect the SGC, if they call that Old Judge Ex/MT then they don't have a clue what they are doing. The image on that 1889 card is misdeveloped and the grade on the card should be penalized accordingly.

Lee- that is great that your T205 came back SGC 84 but I have several T205s I picked up on ebay which are almost identical and which were given SGC 60 grades. Most T205 collectors will tell you that SGC is brutal on T205 cards.

It's so much fun to hear the opinions of the people on the board. I was hoping the T205 Thomas would come out NM, figured it would be border line NM. As far as the OJ I really had no idea what to expect, I was hoping at least VG/EX, a pleasant surprise when it came back with the 80 grade!!!!!!!!!

Keep the opinions rolling, this is why I kind of have problems with grading companies, it's still so subjective, I am going to sell all the cards I got graded except most of the T202's, I like them in these holders, and probably the Old Judge. With the way the PSA 7 T205 commons went for I think I will put that up for sale also.

Good Day All,

Lee
