I can't see paying that either for most cards.

And for a company that desperately needs a decent registry, that won't help.
One of my submissions way back included some really nice 81 Topps commons, figured it was worth a try on some more modern stuff on a special. At the time, a registry was pointless for those, since they had only graded maybe 25% of the set.
At $25, that's going to become a very static statistic.

Isn't a registry just about volume? Even as the #3 grader, I am sure SGC is doing hefty volume in today's market. As long as they are collecting the data, they can always put it together at some point. building these systems take time, but it seems they are making the investment.

I noticed on my last submission, SGC has all of my cards on file with pictures, through a link called "My SGC SellerReadyImages (Expanded Pilot)". Seems like they might be setting up a marketplace of some sort. Maybe PSA/BGS collect this info as well? I am not sure, but it's a really good idea.

What I can tell you is that Rome is not built in a day. But the steps SGC is taking is definitely building a better product and experience.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I am not able to get deals on SGC cards. So I understand people look at the data and see discounted pricing. but IMO this is due to a lack of sales volume all together on specific cards.. I will buy ANY pre-1980 hall of famer in an SGC new slab at a 1-grade PSA discount (assume of course the card is properly graded). I am always looking so please PM me.

Not really. There has to be volume to support it initially, but the main point is to drive prices by getting people to compete for the best set. PSA has pretty much done that really well (And I'm not a fan at all)

I looked at when I posted the 81s here, and it was in 2017. I'd thought it was longer ago.

People can't compete for "best set" if it's essentially impossible to complete the set graded. PSA has enough graded they don't need more cheap commons being graded. And that bulk came from both bulk submissions, and the massive submissions of some dealers.
SGC doesn't really have any of that, so finishing a big set graded would be expensive. At the old specials price, an 81 Topps set would cost just over 5000 just in grading fees. At the new price... 18,150... Not counting variations if you wanted a master set. I can't see anyone doing that.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but it wouldn't have been built at all if bricks were $25 each.

Default Buying SGC

I think a couple of you guys are missing the point. I assume we are all willing to buy SGC graded cards. That’s because they are selling at a discount vs PSA. THAT’S THE POINT!

Why submit to SGC if their cards are selling at a discount vs PSA?? I don’t care how quickly they turnaround a submission.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT talking about all cards and definitely not pre-war. I am definitely talking about all cards 1960 and later and as previously noted pretty much every post-war card.

I agree with Dan here. I recently picked an SGC card for 0.99 on ebay, the same card in PSA was over $20.00

That is a lot of empirical data.

Peace, Mike

On the topic of SGC...

When I lookup a slab on the website, SGC lists the grading date. this is helpful because regardless of old/new slab, I can see when the card is graded.

I do not believe Beckett or PSA provide this info. Is that correct, or am I missing something?

Something that should be known IMO because obviously in the last few years grading standards have changed across the board
