Default Walter Johnson, The Big Train

Haven't had a Big Train thread in a while....One cool card is this M116 unknown ad-cut-type thingy. It's about the size of a regular card....(Thanks for this bio, Google)......

Walter Perry Johnson, nicknamed "Barney" and "The Big Train", was a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher. He played his entire 21-year baseball career for the Washington Senators.

Born: November 6, 1887, Humboldt, KS
Died: December 10, 1946, Washington, D.C.
Baseball Hall of Fame, 1936 Original Inductee
Spouse: Hazel Lee Roberts (m. 1914–1930)
Education: Fullerton Union High School
Children: Eddie Johnson, Bobby Johnson, Walter Johnson Jr., Carolyn Johnson Thomas

Default coulda happened

He was discovered playing semi-pro with the Weiser, Idaho team. think what coulda happened if his surname was Budd and they did a card typical of the era.

Has to among the earliest known examples in the hobby. Here is a postcard from Walter to his friend in California during his second major league season. Postmarked June 19, 1908:

One of my goals in the hobby is to one day own a WJ card, in any condition aside from torn to pieces. (he and my favorite character in baseball history, Rube Waddel)

65 of his losses were by shutouts, 26 of them 1-0 scores still amazes me. It's also interesting how Johnson was left out of the early caramel sets.

The ball field where Walter Johnson played in Fullerton is still there. Both Babe Ruth & Johnson played in nearby Brea, ca.

http://cwcfamily.org/articles/family/breabowl.htm

I live in Fullerton and go by where Johnson played everyday.

I second that thought, I need that version for my collection.

Here is my (different version) m113.

The caption reads "Arm of world's speediest pitcher. Johnson throws a ball 122 feet per second. This arm is reported to earn $12,500 yearly salary"

To save you all from digging out your calculators, 122 fps = 83 mph.

hi Clint and Doug, i am hardly the ebay sleuth, but i have not seen this version available since i picked it up over a decade ago, i think. It was in an auction with a large group of other M114 types, so I had to overpay for the lot to get this copy. I would think that there would have to be other copies that are still out there. Good luck with the hunt!

I think my favorite is actually the Exhibit, despite it being the least valuable. You can just feel the kinetic energy before he whips off a side-arm heater.

The first WaJo card I ever got was a 1976 Topps ATAS that I recently replaced with this one:

Followed a year later by this one (which they can pry from my cold, dead fingers). I was 12. Bought it from Mike Berkus at a show in Anaheim:

Obviously, not in slab at the time.

I never get tired of showing off his rookie "card," WaJo's 1908 Rose Co. postcard. The first "card" that pictures him in the Major Leagues. One of either two or three known.

Great thread, and a rare one that I can participate in.

The first card pictured is the first Johnson portrait I owned. I later sold it, and upgraded with the second card pictured.

I will probably upgrade it one more time; a PSA 5 should have all the characteristics I'm looking for: cleaner borders, sharper corners, and a cleaner surface.

I'm just so looking forward to collecting again. End of September cannot get here fast enough!

There are no identifying marks front or back on this original, double weight 5x7 team photo, but I am assuming it is the WaJo-managed 1928 Newark Bears.

Default Great thread!

WaJo is one of my favorites, I'm still regretting selling my t206 portrait. I'm digging everyone's pieces, some really great stuff.

The first piece is a Sporting News m101-2 featuring WaJo and his catcher Gabby Street. I picked this up in Bagger's last auction.

I just picked up the below postcard from fellow Net54er, Todd, thanks!
