Not mine..I overnighted it today and will have an answer tomorrow. They (SGC) said if there is nothing hidden from the scan it should grade fine. (30 or so). I wanted to get the card first as I have actually never held one in my hand. I did today. It is a little thicker cardboard than I expected. I was thinking they are on very thin stock, like the Coupon type 1's, E103's etc....but they are much heavier stock than those (not heavy stock but heavier than I expected)...more like a thin cardboard. I smelled of it too It smelled like old paper. regards all

Gotcha Andy. I knew yours was in a PSA holder, so that explains why there is now one in an SGC holder.

BUT... did you make sure that PSA REMOVED yours from their registry???

This is VERY important when it comes to cards as rare as these are!!!

I have had them do it many times.

Andy B, could you please post a scan of your Ewing?
If I remember correctly, yours was a beautiful example with some glue marks on the back.
Would love to see if the well-loved Ewing Leon won can match yours and get a 30 from SGC.

I took the PSA Label over to PSA at the National and asked them to remove my card from the population reports, but I have no control over the process, and I have no idea whether or not the card was actually removed.

Here is a scan of the front and back of the card. It may be a little large, but I thought it was important to show detail. In my opinion, one of the nicest SGC 30's in the hobby.

I think Andy's is nicer but both have really good eye appeal. I like how someone previously posted their thoughts on borders of vintage cards. The borders were meant to protect the pictures. Of the 4 N167's listed the other night the Ewing was the only one that didn't have wear encroaching on the picture......it is limited to the borders....we'll see tomorrow...btw, I am glad Andy(hi Andy)didn't try to tamper with the back of his, as I have had some disasterous results doing that a few times, on other series....regards all

Leon's has a shot at a 30. The problem with a card like Andy's, which card I really think is sharp and would dearly love to own, is that it was glued onto something for who knows how long. A card should have nice edges and corners if it's not subject to being handled for years. A tough situation for grading companies, and proof that 30s (if Leon gets his) can look a lot different, although both have nice eye appeal.

I still think that way Leon. I would much rather have border damage than a stain, writing, abrasion, residue or anything else which affects the picture area of the card (sheesh - I didn't think anyone was listening). To me, some cards look better without borders. But not t205s, nor several others.

I know I am not in the majority on this either, but I do not care about a card's back, unless it has stats or a player narrative on it. And pinholes, especially in the border, are sure welcome.

Go ahead grading services: please continue servicing me by downgrading cards for reasons of lesser impact to my values than your scale indicates.

I don't know, but based on the scans, I actually prefer Leon's N167, even with the edges and corners. It doesn't have the diamond cut, and it just looks better to me.

The PSA pop report shows (1) PSA 1-2 and (2) PSA 3-4's. They lump grades together at that level.

Congrats Leon, beautiful card!

I think Leon's card getting graded today is the reason I can't reach anyone on the phone at SGC Congrats on a great card, Leon

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Sorry Andy!

I have to agree that Leon's card is a 30 but Andy's is in superior condition and should have graded higher if not a lot higher!

An N167 Ewing in an SGC-30 holder is a jewel, and even in a collection as prestigious as Leon's, it will go right to the head of the class (but not in front of Kelly).

By all grading companies posted standards, that is "good" condition card.

Did this card go cheap compared to if it were at a major auction house or is this a case where everyone who had the means and want this card would have taken their shot via Ebay?

These cards are very interesting, but what kind of value are we talking here for the card being discussed? Just curious and always trying to learn something about these and all prewar cards. Thanks

I don't think the Ewing went cheap, because there just seems to be more N167 Ewing cards out there than any other HOF from that set.

The PSA 4 Ewing sold last year for $40,000... so I think the price for Leon's equivalent of a PSA 2 is right where it should be.

The only reason the SGC 20 N167 Welch card went for $60k was because there is only ONE out there that has been graded and is therefore considered much harder to get.

Andy you should go and send that card again to SGC or have Leon send it for you!
You got torched with that grade.

I agree that Andy's card presents very well and so does the back despite the glue marks, but the glue marks are still there so the grade fits.

IMHO you are wrong...both grades fit the bill...the back damage on Andy's held it back....maybe you should study their grading scale a little more or give them a call. They will be glad to explain.....regards

Andy's card is very nice, but SGC is very consistent when dealing with glue residue etc. on the reverse. IMO both his and Leon's are graded accurately. SGC even grades blank backed cards tough with respect to glue residue. I do not mind them being strict on this since they are very consistent in their application of the grading standards.

Both cards are terrific and I would love to have either.

Paul

both cards graded fairly and accurately...of course appeal-wise i'd take andy's everyday of the week. if leon could get andy's card at what andy paid for it i'm sure leon would take andy's also!

Damaged borders are cool but glue marks on the back aren't...

Grading services are a joke!

This is a good example on why to buy the card instead of the holder.

Look at the standards, both cards are damaged in different ways but BOTH still have their own flaws and are deserving of the grade.

Congrats Leon! Especially cool to see that it all those cards are probably authentic. Personally, I can't believe they fetch that much money for players that aren't all that "popular", like Ruth, Dimaggio, Gehrig, Johnson, Cobb, Aaron, Mays, etc.

Congrats again!

All of this grading comparison is a whole lot to do about nothing....With the Welch going for 60K and graded at only a 2 and this latest Ewing card going for 25K at a SGC 30 there is only one thing pushing these dollar numbers and that is rarity - someone said buy the card and not the holder, well I think that's actually what is happening with the N167 cards.

I think you are correct. The folks buying in this vintage space, are buying the cards, and not the holders. If mine would have come back a 20 it wouldn't have made me less happy. The card is the card regardless of the number on the holder. With that being said it's not bad to get a higher number

The hell with the plastic slab and label, it is what it is... a RARE desireable card. I don't think I mis-used the word "rare" in this case...

I guess I could have said "the hell with the holder" but that wouldn't be a nice thing to say about the moderator dude... besides, maybe he'll let us hold the SGC holder at the next National, if we're nice...
