No apologies...All cool pennants belong with somebody on this thread (if not me. ). Congrats on a great pick up.

I did!

Big upgrade... it went from a filthy wood table with stains and tape remnants to a clean white table. Someone must’ve commented on it for him to finally change it.

Needless to say, it was not the best backdrop for a nice pennant or anything else!

Default Eagles collection

Itís been a while since I posted in this thread but I was fortunate yesterday to be able to purchase a friendís longtime Eagles pennant collection. There are another 50 or so more modern style in the group as well. There was only one in the group that I didnít have in my collection, but there will be a few condition upgrades too. As to the one I didnít already have, it is the only example I have ever encountered as an Eagles pennant (Iíve seen other teams). This one is the pennant in the center of the first image with the player donning a blue jersey. The navy blue one is a very rare one too (only the 2nd Iíve encountered) as is the Joe Must Go pennant. This pennant was made in an effort to get the Eagles to fire the very unpopular head coach Joe Kuharick.

Wonderful acquisitions, Keith! Be sure to let us know if any of those will become available...

As for the one you did not have... I believe Football Rob has the same exact Pennant, but as a Rams version. And his is the only one I've ever seen as well.

Makes you wonder how they were distributed and by whom. I bet the super scarce ones were sold by street vendors outside the stadiums, as opposed to the commonly seen ones being sold at souvenir stands inside the stadium. Just a hunch with absolutely no foundation.

Thanks Mark.
They will be all available other than the blue jersey one, and for the few that will be condition upgrades - although the versions they are replacing will be available too.

Beautiful collection. I see at least three I've been hunting. The one in question with the blue jersey...I don't have the Rams. I have the 49ers and Redskins...and I've seen the Bills which dates it to the mid/late 40s. I wish I had the Rams. Never seen it. Would love to pick up a collection like that. Great score!

Thanks Rob and Greg.
As to the blue jersey pennant, its nice being able to date it with the Bills pennant you've seen.

That seems like an inordinate amount of football pennants. I know nothing about football pennants....would other early teams (e.g. Bears, Packers, etc.) have about the same number?

I would say the above pennants probably equal about half of the different preó1970 eagles pennants. When I get time, Iíll post the ones in my collection, although I donít have photos of them as a group, just individual photos. As to other teams, I think Rob and Mark would likely know better than me since they collect the other teams. I would speculate they probably have more than most if not all teams.

I'd say most early teams have 50 or so pre-1970 pennants. I know the Packers, Cardinals, Rams and Giants do.

Ha! You are less cheap than me (on this one), as I was an underbidder.

I was hoping that you managed to get this one from a few weeks ago. I got distracted and forgot to bid. Did you get it?

Yes, I did. The polychromatic versions are not too bad but the monochrome versions of the generic stadium are pretty uninspiring. One odd thing about my recent pickup is that itís an inch longer than my other ďPolo GroundsĒ pennants.

Oops, my bad. I did not get that one. I think I was #3 bidder, which always makes me feel better than losing to ďthat one guy.Ē I earlier lost the same pennant, haggling with the seller over five stupid bucks.

I did pick up a different polychrome Polo Grounds a while back.

Default Giants banner

This large pennantish banner just arrived in the mail. 28 x 34 inches. It smells old, but I can't tell how old exactly. The straps have velcro, which was apparently invented in 1952, but I'm not sure when it went into widespread use.

The baseball was sewn and then applied to the felt banner with some type of glue. Letters glued onto the baseball, which is otherwise sewn. It was not made to be outside, at least for very long. It may be an older fan piece. If it is, it is done very well. I was also thinking that it might have been something used inside a store, given its size.

Curious to hear what others think.

Marc, to me this doesnít look like a homemade item, and for sure it is awesome. Look at the back where the black strips stick out .... looks symmetric to me. All four corners look alike. Not proof but it suggests machine production. Also the baseball looks like a pure circle.

Does the orange material have the feel of a pennant?

Greg- about your question regarding whether the felt is similar to a a pennant: I just went and felt up a bunch of 1950s/1960s pennants. My overall conclusion is that the felt in the banner seems more like the felt used to make pennant tassels/spines, and less like the felt used to make the actual pennants. But then that made me wonder if that material was really any different than the felt used to make pennants. I have to admit that I don't know.

Yeah itís generally the same stuff, although cloth pennants usually have (not always) felt spine and tassels. I think the spine and tassels might feel a little stiffer because they are smaller and havenít been rolled, wrinkled, etc. I think you got a good find!

Agree.... That is an EXCELLENT find!

Beautifully done, and way too well-crafted/polished to be home-made. I have no idea what it was originally used for, but it sure makes a beautiful and eye-catching Display piece.

Okay pennant guys, another Retro Clean experiment. I have two 1964 Phillies picture pennants, decided to try it out on my “lesser” condition one. This one was very yellowed and I first tried the diluted bleach and that didn’t quite work, left it blotchy. The picture was barely hanging on so it was easy to remove - keeping original tape intact - along with the year ribbon. After soaking for only a few hours it greatly improved. I wish I took a pic of the back ... there was the typical glue residue that you typically see, it even came through to the front which is not atypical. All gone.

I did notice that the solution in the tub had a very light red tint to it, from the spine and tassels. This left a very very faint red tint to the pennant. So while it was wet and drying, I sprayed a highly diluted bleach mix on it and then Febreze. Now it is pristine with no smell.

Reapplied the pic with clear Elmers glue stick on the original tape.

So... this was a success. Part of one tassel was a casualty, it was very weak to begin with and came off while removing.

Before and after pics below. I’ll add that the “before” doesn’t look so bad but that’s because it directly under a light, it was more toned than it appears.

I donít think every team had one. The Pirates version is pictured here. It seems to be made by the same company who did the ďsliding runnerĒ pennants from the same era. Red Sox and Phillies use the same slider graphic. They share similar stitching, lack of tassels, same logos, one color print, and slightly smaller size. I guess it is safe to say there arenít Trench? I have also been experimenting with holders for my oversized pennants. I bought a roll of 20 gauge clear vinyl from an online fabric store, about $30 including shipping. Cut it into sheets, it will make six holders. Metal yardstick and utility knife for straight cutting, these pennants all have their unique dimensions and angles so best to custom cut them. Clear tape on edges, bottom edge is double taped just to be sure pennant doesnít stick. I think it works. Much better than what I had on the wall.

I thought about making a rigid holder with plexiglass, it would probably cost $30 for one, if you buy at Home Depot they will do the cuts for you. Then again I think you need to separate the edges so the pennant will fit.

I like it, Greg....even though I have no oversized pennants Iím unclear on the double tape at the bottom, though. Is the first layer ďunstickyĒ side up, on the inside of the vinyl?

Gotta rescue this thread from the bottom of the page!

Here are two pennants from the early 50s with a similar design. Anyone know of any other teams that share it?

Observe they are both playing the same infield shift!

I am pretty convinced that those are the only two teams who used that format. I love those two pennants, and have searched endlessly for similar examples of other teams. Since another team still hasn't turned up 30 years later, I have to believe that none exist.

So why just the Browns and Tigers? Seems so random, and quite odd. Just another example of countless mysteries in the world of pennant collecting.

Love that pennant! The HD rigid option seems like a bargain considering the value of the pennant.

Iím not sure if any of you will find this interesting like I do, but here is an ASCO pennant from 1969 - or specifically, with the 1969 trademark. Itís cloth so I do believe it is actually from Ď69. The Uncle Sam stadium graphic is a carbon copy of the same graphic from the tasseled Trench stadium pennants of the 50s/60s. By this time both companies were using trademarks although I guess their artwork was not legally secure?

Iím still trying to complete this ASCO set in cloth and Iím intrigued by the speciality pennants ... this one, the Cub Power Cubs pennant, etc. ... maybe itís the lockdown boredom, I dunno ....

Always loved that Yankees pennant and ironically donít have it in my collection. You of all know that most of these you find have the extremely faded fabric. Nice pennant
