Default Collectors -- Did You Sell In 2020 / 2021...

Question for folks...did you sell in 2020 / 2021 and are you happy with the results, or are you regretting it? Lots of price point movement on different cards / issues both pre and post-war...for those of you that have sold cards in the past year...are you happy with having sold (hopefully making a profit) or are you wishing you hadn't? Let's hear the pros and cons...

Default Sold / Bought

I sold an SGC 9.5 E98 Cobb and ended up getting some PSA 1952 Topps cards for my set; 1 Mantle, 1.5 Mays and 1.5 Robinson...I regret not having the Mint+ 1910 Cobb, but am loving the direction of the 1952 Topps big 3.

I'm mostly happy since I bought and sold at a 2:1 ratio. I bought about $30,000 in expenses and sold about $15,000 in income. By the way, for me that's the highest amount of money being moved about in one year ever.

I sold in August, but nothing I regret and nothing that moved the market. I could have done better if I graded some of them, but by then wait times had exploded. I returned to buying, but nothing that moved the market. I have shifted to more modern.

I sold off the majority of my graded cards in late 2019-20. I fell for the silly to me graded card BS for a while and built up several hundred graded cards. Very happy to have gotten rid of them and the monkey of thinking graded is good.

Because of the huge increase in card prices in later 2020 and so far this year. I have sold several hundred cards for decent money that were almost worthless two years ago. Was very happy to sell them for what I got because it helped pay for my bat habit.

I polished off a lot of sets. Sold a few cards to finance a 52 Mays that seemingly has tripled in value since I bought it. I'm currently focusing on my 1952 Topps low number set.

I had some cards sitting in my eBay store for a year, two years, etc. I never got offers on them. Nobody wanted them! And then the pandemic happened and I started getting good offers. And out they went!

Now, I was happy, but then everything started to go crazy. For example, one soccer card that I sold for $600 US, ended up selling for five times that amount through PWCC a few weeks later! A couple of basketball cards that I sold for under $1,000 US ended up hitting $10,000 US! Even my effing Hulk Hogan card went up by $3,000 USD!

I did buy a Bowman Mantle rookie, Bowman Mays rookie, and a Leaf Jackie during Jan-Feb of last year though, and those three cards have lessened the pain for me. But again, I am just shocked how certain cards went nuts. I wish I had kept some of them.

I sold a few post war and modern cards to help fund prewar purchases. I bought a lot more than I sold, but everything I sold really took off afterwards. Unfortunate timing to be sure but it is what is.

The Ruths and Cobbs I bought are still doing well, and I have a feeling I will be fine on the rest long term. And even if they don't appreciate as much, I will enjoy cards like the 14 CJ Jackson and Matty, and Tip Top Bread Wagner much more than the 93 Jeter and even the 48 Leaf Robinson I let go.

Sold everything I didn’t love. I’m very happy with that decision.

I've sold off many of my Topps Heritage baseball master sets and all of my Bowman Heritage master sets. I've also sold many of my 53 Bowman color extras that I have upgraded from my set. With that money, I have continued upgrading cards in my Bowman set, started assembling a Topps 71 baseball set, and gave my wife a nice gift for Valentine's Day as she's had to put up with my spending habits.

The only card I regret selling was my 1953 Topps PSA 3 Jackie Robinson. Sold with the intention of upgrading to PSA 4 for my set. Missed out on a card in the $500 range (last summer). Prices have moved too quickly now to get a PSA 4 and feel comfortable with it

Missing having that Jackie in my collection.

Everything else I sold I don't miss.

I sold my 1961-62 Fleer Oscar Robertson - PSA 8 and 1957-58 Russell - PSA2 which enabled me to FINALLY land my T205 Hoblitzell - No Stats.

I would make that trade EVERY DAY still!

I sold a good number of cards this past year. Mostly recent I sold a good number of rookie cards from the 80's that came alive this past year. I used that cash to purchase a few items for my PC. Most of my buying has been on the memorabilia side where prices seem to be down. Like a 1905 NY Giants Scorecard from Goldin Auctions this month. Consigned a few items to REA so hope things stay strong through April.
One of the things that has stood out is REA setting up seperate auctions for newer and in many cases very valuable cards. I like that idea seperate auctions for the pre war to pre 1980 cards that REA is known for and the newer shiney stuff.

PS Great card Greg !!

A year ago I sold into the shutdown. I thought for sure as the economy slowed down that card values would follow. I let go of about 20 Mantles, many of them on this site.

Sure I wish I still had those cards. But at least I still have most of my Mantles. The people who sold most or all of their collections are not hanging around on Net54 to give us their side of it. Hopefully they took their money and bought Tesla stock.

I picked out some cards that I planned to sell eventually, and I sold them in September thru November. I got good prices, but I wasn't selling The Big Names, so nothing stratospheric.

I've mostly been selling. I didn't need to sell, but I just felt like the time was right, and my wife is happy that my card collection is taking up WAY less space. The cards that I sold (mostly 60's-70's) went for 3-5 times what I paid 3-5 years ago. I'm content with that.

Last spring I sold some lesser cards that amounted to at most 10% of my collection to pay tax bill. Was darn pleased at the prices and profit margins. Thank goodness still have the vast majority remaining. Logic says now is a good time to unload more, but heck, I just can't bring myself to sell - I love my cards and collecting too much.

I have a lot of cards I'd like to sell right now to find out what they would sell for. But I don't want to be the person who sets the market because I still want my stuff.

I sold a fair amount of vintage last year, all through one auction house. Reasonably happy with the results.
