Default T206 Sullivan variation?

Posted By: daryle

Has anyone ever heard of the possible Billy Sullivan, Chicago AM variation card? The "variation" is in his name on front. It appears to be "Siillivan" instead of "Sullivan" (the bottom of the "u" in Sullivan appears to be broken off resulting in what looks like two"i"s; the bottom of the "u" is visible but kinda "floating" off to the right of the "u"). I first saw the card on eBay in around late 1998-early 1999. The seller (no idea who it was), stated that he had been collecting T206s for years (20+) and this is the only one he had ever found. He had a opening bid of $1000 with a reserve. No bids but a lot of lookers. With all these T206 oddities out there I thought I would ask here to see if anyone else had heard of this card.

I have seen that card (or one like it) on Ebay, although I can't remember any details. When I saw it, it would have been after 2002.

When you print on a printing press....
while running you could get something on the plate (dust, etc.) and it causes what is called a hickey (lack of printing.. a spot).

So probably something was on the plate right by the 'u' and was eventually cleaned off.

Are hickeys / printing marks considered variations?

These are printing flaws, not variations, these occur due to a large number of cards printed and inevitably there will be clogged, broken or cracked printing plates. Are they collectible? yes. Are they a cataloguable variation, NO!

In coins they refer to them as Errors, Freaks and Oddities

Scott--In your opinion, would this card have any value other than a T206 Common? Just curious as I found one at the '99 National while looking thru an album of T206s

to a ever growing base of collectors it would be worth a premium, that still doesn't make it a variation of the set, just a highly collectible printing oddity.

I agree on it not being a legitimate variation. But $1000 w/reserve?..........NOT!

Scott- if you consider that a highly collectable variation then collectors are really grasping at straws. That is about as boring and insignifcant as it gets.

Barry,

I beleive you will find that a small segment of the hobby would find this highly collectible. certainly not a $1,000 card, but possibly a $200-300 card. I myself would not be interested nor perhaps yourself, but I feel fairly confident there would be a handful of folks interested enough to make it get quite a bit of action if auctioned on ebay with no reserve by a legit seller.

I think there are plenty of other T206 like this with just the tiniest printing flaw that is barely visible to the naked idea. A Topps card with a print line across it is more exciting.

I've got a t206 Hemphill with a similar printing error. The "HE" is partially missing. The example shown on t206museum's site also has this printing flaw. Have a look:
