Default New Joe Jackson Pre-Rookie Card Discovered

Posted By: barrysloate

I just got Hunt's March Auction catalog and they are highlighting a new Joe Jackson find- a real photo postcard picturing him with the Greenville Spinners right at the time Philadelphia picked up his contract. It's graded SGC Authentic and appears to pre-date any known Jackson card. I wonder if it will become the next holy grail of card collecting. It's actually a pretty nice image of him.

I seem to remember that card having appeared before. What do you think of the 20K to 30K estimate? Site currently down or else I would have posted a pic.

Sounds low to me. And I don't recognize it, but you could be right. They are presenting it as a new find.

Hmmmm...I'm almost certain I've seen a postcard with Jackson in it from his town team when he was a kid. That would predate the Greenville postcard.

edited to add: I think it's a 1907 Victor Mills team postcard.

Man you guys have sharp eyes. I feel like if I picked that postcard up in a stack I'd immediately cast it aside. How annoyed does the guy standing up all the way to the left look?

Well, earliest single player vs. earliest team. Glad I didn't write up the description.

Barry, you're saying that the card in Hunt's pictures Jackson by himself?

He's by himself and looks really young. Caption at bottom of postcard reads: "Joe Jackson, the Greenville Boy now with Philadelphia"

That would date it 1908-09.

"I wonder if it will become the next holy grail of card collecting."

I don't have the catalog... someone please scan the image and post it!

For the record - I am all for an early RPPC becoming the next holy grail of card collecting

Steve- that is exactly how Hunt and SGC dates it. However, it was postally used and the postmark reads "September 1909" so I suspect it is from the latter year.

it's nothing to write home about, IMO...not that good looking. kind of dark, looks almost like a b&w newspaper photo...

I believe I know the exact postcard you are talking about -
and I had an opportunity to purchase it at a card show maybe a year ago.

If we are talking about the same card -
then it is not a RPPC.

The one I remember was an dark newspaper quality printing.

I didn't like the quality that much... but found the idea of such an early Joe Jackson card to be intriguing. In the end though, I did not pursue the card.

It definitely does not look like high quality paper stock. Michael described it well.

your initial post mentioned 'real photo postcard' - that kind of threw me off the trail.

I immediately thought the postcard that crossed my path was not the one (because it was a printed photo / not a real photo).

I will say - if it is the same postcard that I am thinking about - - even considering the image quality - I think it is a very cool piece.

Joe- remember the other 1903 Giants postcard, with the cardboard cutout in the back? It kind of looks like that. It's a real photo, but printed instead of glossy. Maybe I should have been more precise.

That postcard has been offered at auction before within the last year I believe. It sold for about $2,000 last time. It was in won of the big auctions. Either Mastros, Robert Edwards ro Lelands.

Personally, I would take the team postcard above.

Is there a scan of the back on the website? That thing looks like a periodical photo glued to a postcard back. I have never seen anything that looks like that in 20+ years of collecting other postcards and antiques. I could be wrong, but that thing does not look like it began life as a postcard.

Rhys

Rhys- the same thought crossed my mind, but I guess I assumed SGC did their due diligence before encapsulating it. If it were a picture glued to a postcard I think they would have caught it in a minute.

I believe that the Jackson card appeared at a dealer's table at the White Plains, NY show about a year ago. I don't know the dealer's name but he was selling primarily Type I - Original Baseball HOF Wire Photos. I spotted the Jackson card in his showcase but was tapped out in funds and did not pursue it.

Thanks Phil.

I think the PC should stay around the $10,000 mark myself. It's a very rare cool item, but probably not as desireable as mainsteam issues, plus it's a PC so it may not be a card after all. If the PC was in an SGC 3 holder, would that drasticly chance the price, or is it so rare that any condition commands a price near $10,000.00?

Dan:

I don't think the grade would have a major effect on the price unless it was very high, ie SGC 84+

So I assume it is trimmed which is why it is authentic... I also assume it has some type of typical post card back that ids it as a post card...

Couple of questions...

How many are known?

Who made it and why?

Was it a set or single issue?

There is no way I would buy one of these over a E-90-1 or a T-210.

A interesting piece that reminds me of an early photo I saw at last years national.

I think I liked the photo better and it was only $7500.

for ending the suspense! I believe that is the card that crossed my path at a Philly show - but Frank would know if he brought it there or not.

low photo quality - but a cool item for whoever wins it.
