Default 1989 UD Winningham

Has it ever been proven that a variation exists w/ his name spelled
W1nningham on the reverse?

If so, post a picture please--I'd LOVE to see it!.

The Winningham card can be found in two ways:

ERR: WInningham (capitalized 'I' not a 1)
COR: Winningham

This is another case of Beckett's unreliable descriptors for variations. So much of this type of errant information has been locked in as hard info for decades now.

Beckett basically paid attention and documented variations during their heyday of the late 80's-1990/1991 and then stopped. Very few of the thousands of variations affecting cards from the 50's through 90's, that were discovered post-heyday have been documented in their guides. Similarly, old incorrect info such as this W1nningham card have never been corrected or updated.

You could ask this seller for a scan of the back of his (he is selling more than 5).

This guy has one listed as well, but his scans of the back show his name spelled correctly. ?

Also forgot to note that neither of them shows up in PSA Set Registry or Pop Report as a variation. If you get one slabbed, it may be a 1/1 situation for about a month. ;-)
The next hoarding situation presents itself to you....

Thanks for the replies, but whether W1 or WI---do you know for a FACT that it exists, Jackson?

Swarmee---As for the 2 listed on EBay--I saw those & don't believe either one is a variation at all.

Can ANYONE verify it exists?

I can verify it. I've owned and sold multiple pairs over the years. Ranging from $30 back in '05-06 to $3 a few years ago. I usually grab them if I come across them at a decent price.

Another source mentions that this error was corrected 30% of the way through the print run of 1M.

Thanks for all the replies.

Larry--

Thanks for the pic. These old eyes of mine have trouble seeing the I or 1 on the back of that card, but I'll accept that it is one of them.

The reason I asked to begin w/ was that I have all the other ERR/VAR from the '89 set except that one. I guess it's been out there but my eyes have never seen a closeup to satisfy me that it existed.

Fred,
My eyes are not great either, but, based on the font, in this image it appears to be a capitalized "I". My 89 UD set did not have this variation, so w/o a copy in hand it will be tough to know for sure.

Don't forget that there are 3 different versions of card #701 (Hi series checklist):

COR: MLB logos on back printed correctly
ERR: MLB logos on back, one upside down
ERR: No MLB logos on back
