Default Getting back into modern

I'm mostly (99%+) active on the postwar vintage boards, but recently have been looking for some modern that won't break the bank for a change of pace. For too long now, I've employed a strategy whereby I seemingly cannot get any utility out of a card unless it's vintage and expensive. While that has been fun, don't get me wrong - it's also exhausting at times, and I'm just looking for a break.

Any recommendations for what to collect as a lapsed junk-era kid? My active years with childhood collecting were 1986 up to about '93. I have recently started to go back and pick up some stuff there I never had as a kid when I was losing interest - for example some of the early Topps Stadium Club issues. I know they aren't particularly rare or valuable, (or maybe even popular...) but they do hold some nostalgia for me. With true modern, I will occasionally buy the random Heritage hobby box or Topps Chrome blaster, but I must admit I was shocked earlier this week to see how much even some of the greenest rookies go for in graded slabs online. I assume this is pure speculation. I mean yeah, Acuna seems great but he's played what, 2 years? And some cards are listed for over $500. Him at least I can kind of understand, but like with Bowman Chrome there are kids I've never heard of selling for just as much.

Anyhow, I'm starting to digress. What advice would you give a collector like me who's looking to branch out? I do think that to keep this reasonable for true modern, I'm going to focus on singles and my team (the Cubs). With slightly older "modern", it may be easier to go back and cherry pick some stars from certain sets in the junk era that I don't have yet. But I would appreciate recommendations!

Thanks.

I started collecting in the same timeframe as you, late 80s through mid 90s, and I’m also a Cubs fan. Some of the directions I am toying with are:

1. Basic Jordan cards from when he was an active player. Prices are still inflated from the Last Dance, but it’s unclear to me if they will to pre-documentary levels. I also don’t really collect basketball, but I make an exception for Jordan. Lots of inventory and lots of wacky designs to choose from.

2. Ernie Banks basic Topps run.

3. Buy a card of the best Cubs player from each regular Topps issue.

4. Collect RCs of great cubs through the years.

5. Collect a Cubs team set from an all-time iconic set (33 Goudey, 51 Bowman, etc)

6. I think there was a Cubs set from Topps Archives in 2013 only available at Cubs games. It’s a cool set and there’s a higher end season ticket holder version.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!!

I'm in a similar position as you. Collected from the late 80s to early to mid 90s and have recently got back into it.

I primarily collect Bowman Chrome. This product focuses mostly on prospects and some of the game's better players. As you mentioned, some promising players are selling for incredible prices. Also, I like shopping on eBay for under priced cards and there are plenty of opportunities to buy and hold promising prospects or flip an under priced card for an easy profit.

Bowman Chrome used to be one on the expensive side, but it's probably more middle of the road with all of the premium products available now.

Also, Bowman releases other products throughout the year that all seem to be popular.

Topps Heritage and Gypsy Queen are some of the better 'cheap' products IMO. Especially if the Heritage design is one of the better card designs from back in the day.

Same boat. I ripped wax 1981-1989, but was hooked on 1930s-60s early on. Since my son is into baseball, I get Topps Heritage as I like the look and feel of traditional cards. All the different makes and models, variations ect makes my head spin. I am buying some graded current RCs of top players with my son in mind.
Collect what you like, regardless of value. I'm not a set collector so individual players, vintage/modern, has narrowed my collecting down.

Im 42, love the vintage pre war stuff, but been getting into the cards I chased as a kid in the 90s

Personally, I love the 90s inserts. Either from Skybox, Fleer, Upper deck. All very cool.

I seem to change the way I want to collect more often than not. I'm in my mid 50s and love collecting Dodgers from 70s and 80s. I began collecting HOFs who have rookie cards from the 80s and 90s.

With that said, I keep finding my way to modern cards. For the past several years I have focused on only Dodgers, but with modern, I'm looking at branching out to some of the more young stars.

Best of luck.

The struggle is real. As you know, I am a postwar collector, but the 80s and 90s stuff resonates with me, too. I will also admit to liking some of the new stuff. The Cardinals are my team, and the numbered parallel non-auto cards from Topps are fun to chase and mostly inexpensive outside of the 1/1s.

Default Coming back to bbcards

My story is the same. While I take great joy in ripping the junk era wax out of nostalgia, remember there are sub-sets from that era that had a more limited release. For instance, there were Donruss Best series’ all the way back to 1988. You remember the orange and black border, right? And there’s Topps Tiffany. There’s Fleer Glossy. 1991 Topps features the Desert Storm parallel set and 1993 Topps features subsets commemorating the Marlins and Rockies inaugural seasons. You wanna go old school straight up? The 1992 Bowman set is packed full of good stuff and some cards still manage to retain some value. And there’s always the Topps Finest Refractors from 1993. It’s the parallel set that Redefined parallel sets.

At this point there are enough of us out there to make HOF Player cards Valuable again. Enjoy!

It seems like there is a resurgence with us 80's and 90's kids buying the cards we always dreamed of having. I am in the same boat as you guys! I got the bug again.

I have been out of the hobby for 14 years but when I was in it I only collected pre-war and left all my childhood cards lay dormant. I am a Ken Griffey Jr collector. I have now been hunting down the cards I wanted like 1994 SP Holoviews, 1994 Flair Hot Glove's, and Topps Finest refractors. It is amazing how many great memories these cards have brought back. It's fun to be collecting again. If you like to watch pack rips and check out the new products come out you guys should check out JABS Family on YouTube. Lots of fun and he really inspired me to get back into collecting and starting my own YouTube channel which will be launching soon.

I look forward talk cards again,
Trevor Hocking

14 years, has it really been that long, Trevor? Whew!

I've been steadily gravitating towards 1970s cards for some years since they are my childhood cards and are readily available in nice shape raw. In terms of modern, I like to go the National and spend some time in modern cards to see what I like and dislike. I favor the complex manufacturing of the late 1990s, especially Dufex parallel sets: Flair, Topps Stadium Club Matrix, Topps Gallery Players Private Issue, Fleer Ultra gold and platinum medallion, etc. You know, truly shiny crap. Some of which reliably sells in three figures now.
