Default Recent SGC T206 prices

I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has noticed this as I have many of them as well as PSA. There has been alot of SGC 84's going for less than $400, and some for not a whole lot more. Even quite a few SGC 88's going for around $650-750 range or so. Alot of people have been lambasting Probstein, but he had several of them that sold on Ebay. Maybe it's just me, but the SGC T206 market seems to be tanking a bit....

And how is the PSA T206 market doing in the same grades?

Default prices

I've noticed that too, Kevin. Who knows the answer if there really is one as to why these are going for such a low price. I noticed a SLer go for under $700...a common for $355 and Tinker went for under 1K Looks like the time to buy is now for SGC 84's!

Edited to add: It seems like SGC has sold more 84's recently than PSA has. PSA's prices seem to be on a little bit more of a roller coaster.

Kevin, a T206 is a T206. Just realize how insane it is to value a card based on what kind of plastic it's wrapped in.

Believe it or not Matthew, it does matter to some people. It's silly to me, but it's true.

It is interesting that just a couple of days ago there was a thread about prices surging. I think most prewar cards that are in the readily collected sector of the hobby will ebb and flow, almost like stocks. I remember when I was putting together my T205 set there would be times when it seemed everything was competitive or even outrageous and I was convinced I would have to abandon the set and never be able to afford it and then just as quickly things would settle down.

Kevin,
Did you not say this:

Maybe it's just me, but the SGC T206 market seems to be tanking a bit....

It just seems that you have a pretty large agenda against SGC. How many times do we have to hear that you think SGC is so much weaker than PSA in every regard?

Default T206

Maybe people are realizing that many of the higher graded cards could be trimmed and they are enjoying fat bordered cards that may have lower grades.

I'll tell you what, we are getting off track on why I started the thread. It just had seemed to me that alot of High grade SGC T206s have sold for very cheap prices lately, which was a concern to me. I did not mean to offend, but rather get other opinions as to why this might be happening. I did not mean any hostility towards SGC, I have just as many cards graded by them as PSA.

Mark- If that was the case, why would I have so many cards graded by SGC?

Kevin,
I had no idea you had more SGC graded cards. By the way you talk poorly about them, I would have thought it would have been the other way around.

I don't track the higher grades. I do know, however, that the prices on low to mid grade raw T206s have been rising in the past six months. More people going low grade raw and fewer going higher grade graded?

Mark- Believe it or not, the largest percentage of my very highest graded T206s are from SGC. I have several 88's, 92's, and a few 96's, one 98. This trend just was a tad concerning and I was curious what other collectors thought.....

I think it's because there have been quite a few available recently. Not that it would slow down someone with a good budget, but I think many people will go after the one that's available at any given time harder than any individual one if there's a collection being broken up.

Since they're in the possible range for someone like me, there's also the seasonal thing. If there's a really nice one I'm interested in during the summer I'll usually bid. During the winter the heating oil company takes nearly all the card budget and then some.

I consigned a number of high-grade T206 cards to Love of the Game Auctions, some SGC & some PSA (lots 71-78). it really all depends on pops...all of the cards achieved strong prices, but the results for the PSA examples (which were low pop) were clearly higher.

As some may know, I mostly collect T206's PSA 5/SGC 60 and lower. I collect in these grades mainly because i'm a front/back set collector and many harder to find combo's only come in a lower grade. I don't follow much of the higher graded cards for this reason but I can say that on some lower grade rare back cards, if PSA has 5 cards total and SGC has only 1 and that 1 card gets listed, the price will end at a much higher level than the PSA card in the same grade. Top population cards do sell for much more. What i'm getting at is regardless who graded the card, the total population for that grade and how many are higher can be a factor on price. Grade crossovers are not guaranteed so usually lowest quantity with highest grade pop wins. So unexplained price differences between PSA and SGC could just be related to populations. I do agree though that mid/high 6 thru 8 grades have come down a bit in price. Not as much for the 8's but I think thats mostly because current owners would rather hold on to the card and wait for their asking price before taking a loss.

Kevin, I wouldn't put too much thought into why the prices are coming down a bit for the grades you collect. If there was a large find of thousands of high grade T206 cards found, then i'd worry but for now i'd take advantage of the situation.

I don't really pay much attention to what high grade cards sell for. I love to look at them, but I don't collect them and don't follow the prices of ones that sell.

I stay in the VG to VG-EX range for many reasons- more affordable, you get more for your money, they are very presentable but still have enough "age" to look their age, and I can't see spending hundreds of dollars more on a card because it's a couple of grades higher. Just my take, but please you guys- stay focused on those high grade cards

Sincerely, Clayton
