How do I tell if this is Type 1? Thanks for any help.

Well the stamp has a 5 digit zip code, which was introduced in 1963, 8 years after Clemente's rookie season (1955). Of course, the stamp is not conclusive, and could have been affixed years later. I'd send to PSA but would tend to think it's a later copy.

Damm he was thin as a young man. . . . .

Also United Press joined with International in 1958, so any photos with the stamp from United Press International as one name is 1958 or later. Given that type 1 is within 2 yrs of the photo being taken, it's unlikely to be a type 1

Based on the low contrast, lack of clarity (look at his fingers on his right hand), specks and marks in the photo, and other "telling" signs I can see from your scan, combined with the post 1962 stamping, I think that this is a later print that was probably not made from the original negative. It's always better to be holding the actual photo to authenticate and assess it though.
