Default The ACC and Burdick

Posted By: Dylan

I came across an article about Burdick and was wondering how collectable the ACC's are? Below is a scan of Burdicks personal ACC which was released in 1960. Apprently its full of handwritten accounts of his personal collection donated to the museum. Which included 22 N167's, 29 N321's, 15 N338's, 19 N370's, and 1,912 Old Judge's! 300,000 cards sitting in exactly the same photo albums they were donated in. I know itd cost a lot to preserve these properly but with auction prices these days, sell a few duplicates and it should more then take care of it. Anyways I've never seen one of these for sale, how collectable are they(I'd imagine Burdicks personal copy would be VERY collectable), and what do they sell for?

A first edition original in nice condition goes for around $300-$500....from recent sales history...later ones are much much less...

do you mean the mimeograph pages from 1939-not sure date is right-or the 1960 hardcover first edition? I have a 1940's, 1950's, and pair of 1960's copies. I believe all I am missing is that 1939 one. As for the 1960 edition 3-5 HUNDRED dollars seems WAYYYYYY high. ONE I believe sold at that on eBay a while beck and MANY were listed afterwards with either "no sale" or MUCH more realistic prices. As usual I passed on the one in pages in the mid-1990's (HATE when I do that-but I didn't know better and price was 150.00 or so-more than my limited knowledge and budget could afford). Those numbers are just too high (for the 1960's copies) and I'm sure a copy could be had for under 100.00 as they are available-even with dust jacket and in fine condition. Also I think the gist of the question related to Burdick's OWN copy. I would think that 300.00 or more would be in the ballpark (maybe even a bit LOW) for HIS working copy-much like having an autograph or historical paper in an artist's or writer's hand. I for one would be HAPPY to buy it if it's for sale. I will ask Michael Tedesco or David Grimes for their opinion on "the other side" (sounds like a title for a soap opera:-))

(edited to clarify which copies prices are too high)

I could be wrong but my understanding is the very first ACC was put out in 1953 by Burdick. There might have been checklists earlier but that has been my thought.....is that incorrect?

for me and my 1940's copy:-). Also, the 1930's copies WERE distributed (I imagine in SMALL numbers) but were possibly unbound pages. I haven't seen one-just know they exist. I have my questions posed to 2 people I feel are in the know.....

So I can do some more investigating can you tell me exactly what year your 1940's is....? This would debunk what I have thought all along...but it could have been bunk to start with ....

but I have it wrapped in plastic so I'm not opening it. The cover is similar to the 1950's version but blue. It is 20% or so larger...... Now where is that card I need? I looked in my mailbox and haven't seen it

(edited to add the following)
and YES. It's the one with the schedule back in your first posting of your N360 type cards. The other as I said is NOT N360 while the second entry of the single card IS an N360...... Really. I give up:-(

I have a day job ya know? Maybe I don't think straight sometimes....I actually have a schedule back one at home that has a very small paper loss on it...on the front and not too bad....I would easily let that go...or I might do the other.....I am busy but will get back with you this evening via private email...

Leon.....I have the first one from '39. A supplement was issued in 1940 (just a few pieces of paper) and are sometimes found included in the '39 editions. I also have issues from '46, '53, '56 and '60 (Hardcover). The latter also comes in a soft cover.

argh. Now I'm missing two.... I HATE when that happens. Thanks for the share Mark and just a bit jealous.... If you ever happen to scan the front cover of the 1939 for any reason could you post it here or send it to me privately?
friendly,
henry

Leon, here is why you had 1953 on your mind.

Lot 1104. Rare 1st Edition American Card Catalogue
The first ever edition of the book that started it all. Rare 1953 American Card Catalogue covers everything from baseball cards to silks, blankets, rugs, coffee, soda, candy, cigars, and even the Bible. No '52 Bowman's. The catalogue (subtitled "A Gateway to Enchantment of days gone by" on page 1) is VG-EX, with familiar cover of a maiden spewing a cornucopia of cards. As tough to find as some of the cards inside.

from my post on the non-sports side:

well I don't always have to be the smartest..... May 12 2007, 4:30 AM

or most knowledgeable person posting. I will say my determination to get to the correct answer can be dogged and sometimes frightening. As it turns out, I simply found it by looking over my nose:-) On page 10 of the American Card Catalog (any 1960 or later addition) the following:
1937-1938: 36 page mimeograph copy (KNEW I had seen one with no cover and mimeo pages....)
1939: Typeset copy (have now seen cover thanks to Dan and someone from the other side kind enough to email me a scan - thanks BTW)
1946
1953
1956 (revised and updated to include post cards and souvenir cards)
1960............
