Default Bill McKechnie autograph question

Posted By: Casey

Hi there, long time lurker. first time poster. I mainly collect vintage baseball photographs on a very limited college student budget but still like reading about the old cards as that was my introduction to the hobby in the mid-80s.

Anyway, I have a chance tomorrow to buy from a local antique store a ball that appears to be autographed on the sweet spot by Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie. Because I don't own the ball yet, I can't take a picture of it until tomorrow but the autograph is very bold. One side of the ball says New York Giants-Cleveland Indians, April 1947, indicating the ball was from a spring training game. McKechnie was a coach with the Indians starting in 1947. The ball is also autographed on the side by Woody Abernathy, who only pitched for the Giants in 1946 and 47. The ball was probably an official National League ball, but the stamping is almost completely worn away with only a couple of letters still readable. The ball is in otherwise excellent condition with a slight yellow color and the signature is probably an 8 out of 10.

I am hoping that someone on this board can give me some idea of the ball's value and maybe post some other McKechnie autographs so I can compare sigs. The only McKechnie signature I can find on the net is a signed George Burke photo from an old Lelands auction located here. The autograph on the ball looks almost identical to the one in the photo. That autograph finished fairly high at over $900, but I don't know if that's normal for McKechnie signatures.

I apologize that this question isn't card-related but it is vintage baseball-related and this seems to be the best group of vintage baseball knowledge on the net so I'm hoping you can help me out.

Thanks in advance!

Casey White
