So, my best recollection is 1997. I signed up as my same username on here and shortly after changed to nlcs_sportscards or something like that. I abandoned that account around 2007 to my current account. It had something to do with paypal I think.

There were no pictures when I started. I remember seeing a T214 Victory that was not listed in the SCD. No picture, just an ad, like a classified ad.

From what I remember, there was a time when there were no watchlists, so everyone would search 'new listings' in the pre-war category. You could see the bidders you were bidding against. By the time I clicked on a card, TBob, petecld, iownit! had already placed a marker bid. I remember gabrinus from those days, and many others who are here now. CanofPrimo sniped a lot of the cards I thought I was about to win.

I remember Full Count had weekly auctions, and Dr Cycleback sold losts of baseball stuff. I remember buying a Connie Mack from Jay that I couldn't afford, so I re-listed it a week after I got it, and re-sold on eBay for an $18 profit. Good times. My first OJ was from ebay, smiling Al Maul, I also sold that one long ago. I thought selling was more fun than buying back then.

Rob I remember those days fondly...that was how I used to find cards worth bidding on by who was already bidding...here is some old school packaging...still can't remember the user ID of who used to snipe us all...Jerry

Jerry, that's cool that you still have that shipping label. Brockelman and Luckey were always "heavy-hitters", I don't want to say "whales", whatever the term for, if I were bidding against them, I wasn't going to win the card.

I don't have the best memory and get things mixed-up. I know there are lots of usernames I would recognize if someone said them, like Brian mentioning Jack87. I bid against him, and sold him some cards.

I have been a member of Ebay since October of 1997. I remember the first time I searched the word "golf" only around 600 items showed up. As of now, you would get over 4 1/2 million items. A lot has happened in 25 years for all of us.

'98, as well. The system had some flaws, or features, depending on how you look at it. If you knew the handle of someone who had the same interest in a niche as you, you could see what they were bidding on ahead of time and it could help you find stuff that you may not have found yourself. Felt a little guilty doing that, but it was helpful.

Sept of 2000 for me. Got a bit of a late start. Since I’m in Silicon Valley, I knew to be wary of these types.

Just squeezed in to the 1998 club...Dec 28, 1998. I really haven't gotten that much of note off eBay, but have gotten quite a few obscure Marshall University cards.

October 1998.

And shortly after bought a Ted Williams Florida forgery! Chalked it up to "tuition" to learn the hobby. Some of my favorite Type 1 photos I've found on ebay.

Since June 4, 1998. I wonder how many of us did ebay business with each other in the 90s. I didn't have much pre-war then (wish I still had that yellow Goudey Ruth I sold though). I was mostly a 50's & 60's era collector.

seller and buyer questions were answered by the sellers and buyers (we functioned as customer service)! There was a SINGLE front page with "big" auctions.....

Great idea to look back.

Well over 95% of my purchases have been cards or smatterings of memorabilia.

My first purchase was a 1968 Topps Football card. Looking at the prices and descriptions, the prices are so low when compared to today.

I remember back then is when eBay was 1st going public and they were offering shares for like $38

I also remember thinking "Who, besides me" - is gonna sit around in thier underwear and buy & sell crap on this internet thing

So needless to say - I didn't fall for the $38 per share scam

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Member since the summer of 1998.

Went nuts buying up a whole bunch of modern stuff for the first few months. About two years later is when I discovered their chat boards/forums and met a guy looking to dump off about 100 mid-grade 1955 Topps cards as he was upgrading his set. That's when my foray into vintage began.

I picked up a very important quarter plate daguerreotype of a home in New England for less than $10 that was listed as a damaged tintype. I had no idea what I was buying at the time but did know outside dags of houses were $500+. I researched the dag with two New England Historical Societies, and both wanted to buy it. I told both I would list it in the Sotheby's photo auction. Sotheby's declined to list it as it didn't meet their $500 minimum value (at that time) so I sold it and it went to the place where it belonged for $5000 even though it was worth more. So many times, over the years the big guys have been clueless about value.

Same year I received my first computer.
Selling Griffey RC’s helped me get through college.

Since January 1999.

I was at the Live Guernsey's Auction in NYC late 1998 when they auctioned all the major Big Mac & Sosa HR Balls from the '98 season that just finished (I was in the front row when McFarlane won the 70th HR ball...pretty exhilarating auction). Anyway, there was a small table in the corner promoting their website, so I picked up a press kit folder they were giving out (still have it)...it was eBay.
