Glad you're enjoying the thread! It's been a lot of fun. If I don't turn a profit, it'll still be worth the cost of the lot in entertainment value.

That being said, with less than half the sets even listed, and only a few sales, I've already got 12.9% of the initial investment back. It'll take some time. but I expect we'll get there, and hopefully have a few PSA subs to boot.

Like others, I find this very interesting and entertaining. Primarily because I collected minor league cards starting in around 1991 and stopped around 2001.

But the main reason I'm posting is to say that there is a "notable" card in the Huntington Cubs set - Amaury Telemaco. That name rang a bell and I looked him up on Baseball Reference. He pitched for around 9 years in the majors getting into over 200 games. He was a real stud with a -0.9 career WAR. I also looked into the Madison Muskies set and there is no one who stands out to me, not even Gubanich. I had to look him up, never heard of him before.

Good luck and keep posting!

I'm glad you're enjoying the thread. It's fun to share these little "projects" with fellow collectors...motivates me to keep going, and makes the little victories bigger since I get to share.

I've always loved minor league sets...I have bought a LOT over the years...for autographs, for rare/interesting cards of stars, and just for fun.

Ha ha....I guess "recognizable names" is very subjective. I consider myself a pretty informed baseball fan, and I don't recognize Telemaco. Gubanich played in the Red Sox system for a bit, so I remember him from that. He had a 0.2 career WAR in only 18 games.

Another sale:

1994 ProCards Louisville Redbirds

Sold for $3.99 plus $3.99 shipping. Shipping cost $3.35, so minus shipping, eBay fees, and the original 60 cent cost of the set, that's $2.68 profit. That $2.68 pays for roughly 4 1/2 set purchases.

Someone bought THREE sets!

1993 ProCards Waterloo Diamonds
1993 ProCards Columbus Clippers
1993 ProCards Appleton Foxes

$3.99 each plus $5.99 combined shipping ($3.99 plus $1 per set) for a total sale of $17.96. Shipping cost me $3.57. Figure in $2.51 in eBay fees, and the original price of the sets and I've got a $10.08 profit here!

So, with six sets sold (and a couple lots from other sets) we've resold about 6% of the lot and have made back 34.5% of our investment. Not a bad start!

Just had someone buy FIVE sets!

1993 ProCards Spokane Indians
1992 ProCards Gulf Coast Dodgers
1994 ProCards Columbus RedStixx
1994 ProCards Burlington Indians
1994 ProCards Rockford Royals

$3.99 each times 5 = $19.95. I combined shipping at $7.99 for a total of $27.94. I upgraded the seller to priority shipping as a thank you for the order, which cost me $7.67.

After shipping, ebay fees, and original cost of the 5 sets is figured in, that's a profit of $13.53 ($2.70 per set)!

That puts us over 59% of our initial investment recouped, with only 11 sets sold, 3 lots sold, and 41 more sets to list!

Another sale...from the 1994 Albany-Colonie Yankees set, this time a 2-card lot of Jim Wiley. I made a $1.79 offer when someone watched the item and they purchased.

At $1.79 minus 0.53 shipping and eBay fees gives us a profit of 74 cents.

That pushes us past 65% of initial cost reclaimed....not a bad start!

Mike, if this helps your math at all...

...unless I'm having a brain fart...and it's entirely possible ...

...you've already adjusted for the cost of the sets in each transaction by listing the $58.74 original purchase price.

If you're keeping track based on what has been "reclaimed", you don't need to deduct the original purchase price of each transaction because you've already done that. All your other deductions/additions (fees, shipping, etc..) are relevant...but that one should not be, IMO.

You've technically, not actually made a profit, until you exceed the $58.74 purchase price...but I think you're closer to that goal then you think you are.

Just my "2 cents" , and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, or have explained that horribly.

Thanks Dave...I see what you're saying. I'm either doing my math wrong, or comparing apples to oranges...maybe both.

It's probably the latter...where I'm calling it "total reclaimed", I should be calling it "total profit".

Found another set with a card that stuck my interest.

The 1993 Procards Birmingham Barons set has a few recognizable names on it, with the biggest player probably being Ray Durham. I was actually after the manager of that minor league squad, Terry Francona. I think Francona is a HOF manager, and figured this would be a fun card to sub.

I am likely in the majority on that opinion (PSA pop zero), but the card looks good enough to go into my "future sub" pile.

This isn't the first pop zero Francona card I've subbed to PSA...but that's a story for another day!

The rest of the set gets listed on eBay, at $1.69 each since they're only one card and not two card lots.

Another sale:

993 ProCards Birmingham Barons MIKE ROJAS #1210

I had this listed at $1.69 and when someone "watched" it, I offered 10% off. So, a whopping $1.52 sale! After shipping and fees, that still gives me a 50 cent profit...which I'll take for a 28 year old card of a minor league coach!

I saw this thread when new and have not come back until today. Gotta like that you have pretty much made back your initial investment, minus your time, of course. When dealing with cards, most of my time is considered entertainment, so I'd be happy with whatever I kept from the lot and still getting back every penny I spent! Congrats!

Thanks for checking back in!

Yes, cards are entertainment for sure - making back part of the money invested isn’t worth it from a time perspective, but it’s part of the fun. I often look at card purchases of packs, sets to break, etc with a thought to “how many hours will this entertain me…then I compare the cost to going to the movies, out to dinner, a show, etc…usually the cards are cheaper per hour of amusement than other options!

have enjoyed reading about your project. It's amazing how you're finding a market for these cards. And you are doing better than you think, because your accounting is flawed.

There are two ways to do the accounting. The first and easiest way is to take cash in less cash out. Your cash in so far is about $66. This is what you received from ebay. Your cash out is the $58.74 initial investment. So you are up $7 already.

The other way to do it is set by set. For the sets and lots you've sold, you have netted a $55.45 profit. Your 80 unsold sets cost you 59 cents each or about $48 so you have a loss on those so far. The net again is about $7.

So congratulations! You are already in the black on your project.

Thanks for reading...glad you're enjoying it, and you're right...I figured I'd make my money back...but didn't expect to do it selling less than 20% of the total.

And yeah, I think I was trying to be TOO conservative with my math and ended up kind of double-counting the expense.

It's crazy to think about how much this little lot will eventually pay back...even if i need to discount some of the sets and cards to get them gone.

Anyway, not getting rich on this, but it's been fun to show you can make your money back!
