early Gehrig vs. late Cobb

Without much published price info, would you think a 1920's Gehrig or Cobb to be valued more - all else the same. |

Steve, I think it differs by the issue and scarcity. |

i know nothing about 20's cards...the only thing i would put out there, is that the 1925 Exhibit Gehrig is considered his rookie, and i'd imagine that would trump most 20's Cobb cards...but i could be wrong... |

but I'd give the nod to Gehrig, for reasons stated by others. They don't share alot of issues, but Gehrig's cards are early in his career, and Cobb's at the end. From a collector's standpoint, Cobb has sooooo many cards issued prior to the 20's that finding one to suit your collection is rather easy, subject to your finances. Gehrig's cards are less available. IMO, collectors are far more interested in an early Gehrig card, from the Yankee dynasty period no less, than they are in a late Ty Cobb card from when he was old and not even a Tiger (eg. the '27-'28 issues). I believe the market would bear that out as well. |

I collect exhibits and I can tell you on those issues there is a large price difference. I own a 1927 Exhibit Cobb and I have been looking for a Gehrig of that year and the cost has been in excess of 3-4X what i paid for the Cobb, same condition. Same goes for 1928. The 1926 has a much larger difference. |

Those would be the 1925-1926-1927 and the PC back set. However, there are variations in the PC back set so you have to compare like to like. |
