Default E95 Cobb - Opinions?

Posted By: runscott

I'm always looking for an EX condition E95 Cobb - my favorite of all Cobbs, which is why I spotted this one. I have my thoughts about this particular one, but want to hear the opinions of the rest of you: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2788184568&category=31719

Disclaimer of intent to accuse of malice: The seller has stellar feedback, so if anyone infers from this post that I'm "bashing" (Random House - "the act of assaulting or abusing"), please don't.

For all the staining and creases the card exhibit, corners and edges don't seem to be consistant with the rest of the wear and tear.

This is definately one of, if not my favorite Cobb card.

Jay

the condition, it's not even close to Ex. The card itself doesn't look natural to me...just my opinion!

Take care!

I have to agree with Jay - I find it impossible to believe that a card could sustain that kind of creasing and staining without suffering any notable corner wear. Something isn't adding up here.

The first thing that I noticed is the numerous horizontal creases. If I were a betting man, I would guess that this card had been peeled out of a scrap book. The creases look to be ones that would result when pressure from pulling created these "compression" creases. I would definitely request a scan of the back of the card, and I would not be surprised to learn that the card is rebacked or still attached to remnants of the scrapbook. Just my opinion from a poor scan.

Sorry, the anonymous post above (agreeing with Jay and questioning the creases and lack of wear) was me.

I asked for a scan yesterday and so far haven't received a response.

I agree with John and Mike - something about that card isn't right. I wouldn't be surprised if it is fake.

look much newer than the card! But anyone calling the card ex to begin with is auctomatically suspect.

I'll add just one thing: the type of creasing you see here is exactly what you see when someone creates a fake using two layers (thin cardboard plus paper image) and then "adds" aging creases.

I believe this is a hand-made forgery rather than a reprint.

I can't tell from the scan whether the card is authentic. It may be an enhanced scan; I got a T card once that had been enhanced to brighten up the image for ebay. The real item was darker looking because of wear. The enhancing gives off the "glow" effect that makes the card look fake.

Two things I can say: (1) if he is faking the card, he sure set a high reserve for a fake--sort of goes against the grain of the usual scammers, and (2) the card isn't even close to ex, so I'd bypass it and bid on another one w/a better scan and more accurate seller.

When I read this - "Ty Cobb EX BEAUTIFUL condition" - I though the EX meant Extra not EX condition. I've never heard of beautiful as a condition.

Just clever use of words by the seller?

He just doesn't know cards. No big deal. I posted this link because it was a good example of a caramel forgery, showing all the classic signs.

He sent me this scan of the back:

The back of card shows it is an obvious reprint, mostlikely homemade like runscott said. Look at the "a" "e", etc. they all have holes that are solid. Authentic E95's are much clearer and print is not so bold on back, and back should be printed in solid black ink. He has relisted it again #2789042322. Frank

it is a fake, this ran along with a group of several other Cobbs and hof's that had a crease on or nearly the same exact spot of the card as the rest did.

I guess if you own one , you just know ...especially this one....ugh

Scott,

I've only owned a few caramels, so I'm no expert. In my opinion, something about this card just doesn't look right at all. The borders all the way around are just too even (trimmed?) and the corners are far too sharp when compared to the staining and creasing on the rest of the card. I would pass this Cobb up even if it was authentic, just based on the fact that it has the appearance of an altered card.

Regards,
Adam
