Default T205 Collector Input Sought

I have long been curious of and attracted to the T205 gold border cards. I'd like to add one to represent the set in my collection.

I was wondering if fans of the set or its key cards could weigh in for me, in terms of which is the key or keys to the set, and what characteristics one should seek out when after a standout example (i.e., full, unblemished borders, portrait focus, etc.)

My understanding thus far is that Cobb and Mathewson are two of the more major cards. I kind of have Cobb represented already, but if he is really "the" card in the set, could always add another Ty, I suppose.

Thanks.

Best,

Matt

Default As if Matty were on a Bender

Mathewson is a great choice, but it has been noted here before that this particular card is frequently seen out of focus.

I personally think the Cobb in the set is one of the absolute best looking cards in the hobby, especially when it has the "pop" factor.....

Sometimes cards, especially ones like the T205 Cobby, have super clarity, brightness and focus. Cards like that are said to "pop" because of their colors. It can refer to any card that, when you look at it, you go "wow!!".

Cobb and Mathewson are beautiful, as well as expensive. If your only looking for beauty I would check out the subset in the T205's that are the minor league cards. They are amazing. Im at work now, but maybe over the weekend I can post them, if someone dosnt beat me to it.

Agreed on the Matty - if registration is good; otherwise he looks Frankensteinish. Here's a nice one:

I agree with Leon, I think that aside from the N162 Kelly, the T205 Cobb is the most beautiful card in the hobby.

That said, the Matty is gorgeous as well, and as far as lesser HOFers goes, the Zach Wheat has always been one of my favorite cards. I also really like the Joe Tinker.

Tough to stop at just one for this set. It's a gorgeous one.

Think I gotta go with the Cobb, all things considered.

Now to find a nice mid-grade example! Anybody got one-- just holla!

One type is not enough. Get a NL player (Matty?), AL player (Joss, since the bio is interesting and highlights one of the great things about T205... stats and write ups), and a minor leaguer.

I have to agree with Steve on the minor league cards. The design and colors on those are so nice.

Matt -- as already mentioned, one of the keys to finding a sharp card is registration. Registration can be all over the place on this issue.

On the Cobb, for example, the red infield can sometimes be shifted a bit, which is not uncommon. Another thing to look for is the brown coloring within the two bats on the Cobb card, which can often be slightly off register.

Cobb, Matty, Zach Wheat have all been mentioned, and are all beautiful cards, but another standout is the Home Run Baker -- just love the blue/gold color combo on the A's cards...

It always seemed to me that the Speaker card is a tough card to find at a bargain rate. Maybe it's the BoSox fans, but although not tough to find, it's tough to find without spending more than you would expect.

Cheers,
Geno

MattyC,

Enclosed are some links that may help you from the set my son and I have completed.

Truly one of the most beautiful pre war tobacco sets out there today.

If it was me, I would buy a tough variation or short print. It seems like the Hall of Famers are always available at one time or another.

THE cards for the set are: Hoblitzell "No Stats", Wallace "One Line" and recently, Mathewson "37-1"

Thanks,

Matt

The Joss card is fantastic as well. I will probably do his and a Cobb, and one of those minor leaguers whose image strikes me. These seem like cards I'd want to select in person at The National, unless online scans were very high rez.

In-person certainly helps. I distinctly remember seeing my T205 Cobby for the first time. Brian Dec had just got it graded and we were both set up at the now defunct Oaks Show. I had been waiting for one for literally years that had the right characteristics. It had to be well centered, have the "pop" effect and not have much gold border missing. And it also had to be priced right. I had no cash but he and I did a trade for it. Until I actually did the deal I couldn't take my mind off of it. (I think I am obsessed )

Fortunately it was in an SGC 5.5 holder and I got it bumped to a 6 on review. The grade didn't matter that much but if/when I go to sell it, it will help the price some.

I have to agree with Turner (as my avatar can attest to)...the Wilhelm is such a pretty card.
For wonderful T205 art...my picks are...

1. Wilhelm
2. Matty
3. Cobb
4. Joss
5. Pfeister

My scanner isn't so great, but these cards have awesome background color and beautiful borders.
