Default OLD JUDGE WARNING

Posted By: Jay Miller

There are three Old Judge listed on ebay by a seller **jode--ball**. They are a Ewing, an O'Rourke and a Behel. The seller asserts that the cards were trimmed from an 1887 ad sheet. This obviously cannot be the case as two of the cards are 1889 cards. Also, I have never seen a spotted tie on an ad sheet. The seller notes that the cards are of different thickness which seems to imply some rebacking. However, this isn't the major problem. A rebacked Behel would still be a great find. It appears to me that the cards may be counterfeits. They just don't look right to me. If anyone here chooses to bid I would suggest close inspection of the scans and a guarantee from the seller that the cards are original.

Jay............AND, when anyone has fake cards, they never fake Decker or Tomney or Sprague.....it's always the Hall of Famers. Can't people be happy with screwing people for $50-$75....? Gotta go for the big hitter in Behel or Ewing.......

Behel is one of the scarcer spotted ties (which are an 1887 16 card subseries of the Old Judge set picturing N.Y. Met players). Behel is also thought to be a Jewish player. The scarcity of the card and the increased demand coming from collectors of Jewish players has elevated the value of the card.

By the way Jay, nice call on the Big Ten not winning more than one game. Can you say five for five? Unfortunately, the next round will probably not be kind to these teams.

never fails, if pick Big 10 schools, they lose, and if I don't, they win, so I think it's time to start flipping coins on their games.

Default OLD JUDGE WARNING

I took a look at these cards and they are eerily similar in appearance to the Old Judge counterfeits that have been offered on Ebay by seller "tallskinnyalien", a.k.a. mostlymoab, a.k.a. pynetar. I posted a message the other day about this seller and my experience with him, although I don't think that Jode-ball and tallskinnyalien are the same person, anything is possible. The rusty color of Jode-ball's Old Judges is nearly identical to the counterfeits that the other seller has offered. Although I realize that over time N172 can fade and be pink, brown and even greyish in color. These cards and those offered by tallskinnyalien seem to be an awfully unusual and strong rusty brown or orange. Maybe the scans of the cards are just bad, I'm far from a reliable expert on Old Judge cards and I may be way off. Personally, if I couldn't get a better scan of those cards, I would side with caution and not bid on them. I also would be wary of anyone that would start off an auction with an opening price of next to nothing for a spotted tie or hall of fame player. I'd rather pay alot and be sure, then pay alot and get ripped off.
