Default HOF: 1 or 1's

I believe I have the only graded 1922 Witmor Candy George Kelly card (and possibly the only card). Show any card of a HOF'er that you believe could be the only known copy of that card.

If anyone has a card that someone else thinks is a "1 of 1" then please show it!

I know this is not Pre-WWII but it is a HOFer and 1/1(only known). I have owned/still own several other 89 & 90 Score wrong back pairs of HOFers. In 20+ years of looking I have only found 2 1990 and 0 1989 Score wrong back cards that I did not own first.
This is a Wade Boggs/Roger Clemens 1990 Score wrong back pair. Click on the pic for a short video of them being turned over to show both side of the cards.

I'm always hesitant to call any card a "one of one," because I think there are so many collections out there that few people know about. That being said, I'd welcome the chance to see another example of this Aaron (forgive the departure from post war).

I never call anything one of one.....I always say one of one "known"......as I too think there is more of almost everything out there...for now, this is a one of one.

I've posted this one in other threads - as far as I know, this is the only known PC of Campy on his Mexican League team. (not autograph on back)

Great stuff, guys, this is my kind of thread. At one time, it seemed that about 1/3 of my collection was 1 of 1's but, unfortunately, many of those are now gone.......

Default Nice thread

I find this very interesting and enjoyable, but I can't help wondering how long it will take for two guys to post here each one proudly showing us his beloved copy of the same card.

By posting first, we may be killing off the competition . Besides, I'd post this one, but I am sure someone has another:

No, sorry, I missed the part about HOFs.
But if there was a hall of infamy he would get in on the first ballot.

Default RPPC 1908 Oshkosh Indians with Kid Nichols, manager

Another possible '1 of 1', with tie-in to Stengel card - Nichols was Stengel's neighbor in Kansas City.

In the spring of 1910 (according to Stengel's biographer, Robert Creamer), before Stengel reported to the Kansas City Blues, Nichols gave him some advice, cautioning him about arguing and advising him to listen to his manager and the older players. Fifty years later, Stengel still remembered that conversation.

Wow... I actually met George Kelly! He (and his wife) were friends with my grandmother... They all lived in Millbrae, CA and I got to go over there one time when I was a kid and got an autographed baseball and saw his amazing trophy room. He told me an amazing story of what an a-hole Leo Durocher was back in 1921... He said Durocher and Casey Stengel were going at it during a game... and they decided to fight after the game. Stengel asked Kelly to go with to watch him whip Durocher and when they got there Durocher was carrying a bat that he wouldn't put down... I think that's the first time I recall an adult swearing in a conversation with me... It was a pretty cool conversation.

When Kelly was inducted into the Hall of Fame, my grandmother was invited and she brought me back a program signed by a few players. I have to fish it out... but I seem to recall: Kelly and Lefty Grove... (Might have been Lefty Gomez... but pretty sure Grove.)

When Kelly passed away, my grandmother told me that Kelly's wife had wanted to give me a souvenir of some sort, but that there son wouldn't let anything go. Oh well...

The real photo postcards posted in this thread have been amazing, but I kind of think they don't really fit within the spirit of a "1 of 1 card" as I'm viewing it. I do consider them cards, or close enough to cards. And I'm glad they've been posted. But so many real photo postcards are unique examples. A real photo postcard that's a 1 of 1 isn't particularly rare, even though that particular example might be, if that makes sense. But a 1 of 1 for a card that is part of an issue where numerous examples were likely produced and distributed is quite rare, in my opinion. I'm definitely not trying to take anything away from the RPPCs that have been posted here because there are several of them I would love to own. I hope some of that makes sense because it doesn't feel like I'm doing a good job of explaining myself. Also, like Leon, I prefer to say "only known example" instead of 1 of 1.

Anyway, here are a few of mine:

1902 Seymour Church Rube Waddell premium

1927-28 Mallorquina Martin Dihigo (1st card)

1945 Mexican Ray Dandridge (1st card)

1950s Dominican Juan Marichal (1st card)

Just messin' with you DanP, yours would grade higher than mine anyways!

I have never seen another strip card version of this Simmons:

Only specimen of this Adam Hats Gomez I've ever seen:

There were probably a few of these printed, but this is the only one I've ever seen in decades of chasing this set, a prizewinning card from the 1968 Atlantic Oil contest set:

I've seen others from the issue but not this one:

Not exactly a card but a neat item of my favorite player as a kid:

Coney Island Arcade Lou Gehrig:

And just because my collection is...eclectic, I have to throw this in:

1930 Chocolatin Mercedes Papke and Lewis. A very rare issue from Uruguay:

This thread should be called "debunking supposed one of a kind HOF'ers!"

I can't believe any T206(besides maybe a signed one or a print freak) is a 1/1?!

Ryan,

Your Juan Marichal is awesome. Do you know what year or what set it is from?

Paul

It looks like Marichal played in the Dominican for that team (Leones del Escogito) from 1957-1964. All Dominican "Album cards" are just estimates when it comes to dating them. That said, I think that Ryan's card is simply bad-ass too!!!

Seems strange to call an 1886 issue Deacon White's rookie year since he began his major league career in 1871, but card sets wouldn't surface until the end of his career. The presented portrait of Deacon was unknown until 2009 when a near complete collection of Tomlinson cabinets surfaced. Several action poses (batting or pitching) are known for each player on the 1886 team but portraits are often unknown or unique.

You can make any card a 1 of 1 by writing on it -- or, better yet, having your wife write on it.

Sign your name on the front (or back) of a 1986 Topps Don Mattingly and -- voila! -- assuming you don't do it again, it's unique. Like Ryan said, not sure that was the original intent of the thread.

Here is a card that is unique in a certain sense - its provenance. It is from the estate of King Kelly's teammate, Billy Sunday. So if the image itself is not unique, at least the provenance is.
