[IMG][/IMG] Does anyone have a clue as to who this St Louis Cardinals player might be? Can't see the uniform number, but appears to be from the late '30's or early '40's. This is a Geo. Burke original photo.

I thought it might be Medwick, but looked at quite a few images of him before thinking otherwise. It's close, though.

According to Marc Okkenen's book on uniforms:
1. the Cardinals didn't wear that dark cap until 1940, so that seems to be the earliest date for your photo.
2. throughout the 40's, the Cardinals' socks had three rings when they wore their home whites, and two rings when they wore their road grays. Your photo shows three rings, even though I would have guessed this to be a road uni, as the socks appear to be lighter and becuase Burke was out of Chicago (although St. Louis would not have been much of a road trip).
3. during the war years 1942-45 the Cardinals wore a patch supporting the troops on their left shoulder. Hard to tell here, but it doesn't appear that there is any such patch.
4. White uniforms were worn with dark sleeve undershirt, grays with white undershirt. Alas, your guy wore no undershirt.

My guess is 1940 or 1941.

The stadium has all the looks of Wrigley. The brick wall surrounding the field and the ramp going to the upper deck are almost dead giveaways!! Looking at the position of the steel post also looks exactly like Wrigley. I spent thousands of hours at the old ballpark and I feel I know it pretty well!

Considering that this is a Burke photo, I think that's a given.

Would the 1947 All-Star Game at Wrigley account for Medwick (or whomever it is) wearing St Louis home whites in Chicago? Not sure if Medwick was on the NL roster for that contest, but check to see who was there from the Cards, that might be your guy.

And a quick look here:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/yr1947as.shtml
shows Kurowski, Marion, Musial, and Slaughter, along with pitchers Brecheen and Munger, as the St Lou All-Stars in '47. Just in case that's the venue of the photo.
