Did McGwire do it the year he set the rookie record of 49 HRs?

I'm hoping I'm wrong, and it was The Beast.

Not sure if he was the first, but was it Jim Pendelton of the Braves? In 1953 he had a 3 homer game which was his rookie season.

My money is on someone from the 19c. For an era not known for HRs there sure were a lot multi-HR games back then.

OK. I had to look it up.

Mickey Cochrane did it in 1925. (He only had 6 HR's for the entire season.)

Butch Henline had done it in 1922, but he had 112 ABs in 1921 which I think was enough to disqualify him from rookie status (but I don't know for sure, because that is one of those rules they change from time to time.)

Okay- I'll start Saturday morning off with one:

Who is the only manager to lose two different games with two different teams by the identical score of 26-7? And name the teams for extra credit.

I guess that one was too easy. Davey Johnson was managing the Mets in 1985 when the Phillies beat them 26-7 (it was 16-0 in the 2nd inning).

He was also managing the Orioles a few years later when the Texas Rangers beat them by the same score. In that game, the Rangers were leading 10-7 and then scored 16 runs in the 8th inning (I think).

These are the only two pitchers who were involved in both Babe Ruth's 60 home runs and Joe D's 56 game streak.

Barry:

As an FYI, I'm now a 3-time SABR team trivia titlist and a six-time finalist. While I know whom is better then me on trivia, I'm still probably in the top 10 in the country or so.

You can see me for about 3 seconds on MLB.Com during their recap of the SABR convention

I used to be better at trivia (top 5 or so); but something about marriage took away much of my time. Teddy Z will verify that I'm pretty darned good on this subject

Regards
Rich

Edited to eliminate a small typo and a minor grammar mistake. Can't let the English professors on the board get too persnickity.

Rich,

I'm waffling on my Cochrane answer. MLB currently states: "Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list). "

Henline did not have enough ABs but I have no way to determine if he was on the roster for more than the 45 days. Moreover, who knows what the rule was (if they even had one) back in 1921-22.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
I was at that Mets/Phillies game.
Von Hayes () hit 2 HRs in first inning.

Wow, you were at the 26-7 game! I remember now that Hayes hit two homers in one inning. I guess it's safe to say you will never see a higher scoring one. That's a once in a lifetime.

Okay- this is not a question but a memory I have of a bizarre day in baseball history. Let's see if anyone else remembers it.

In July, 1969, the Mets were hosting the Astros in a doubleheader. Seaver pitched the first game and left after 8 innings (I think) trailing 5-3. In the top of the 9th the Astros scored 11 runs and won 16-3. Seaver took the loss and his record dropped to 15-7.

In the second game of the doubleheader the Astros scored 10 runs in the 4th inning and won that game 11-5. It was one of the very few times in baseball history that a team had two innings of 10 or more runs on the same day.

But it would probably be the last bad day the Mets would have in 1969. Seaver would not lose again until Game 1 of the World Series, and the Mets went on one of the greatest two-month tears in history.

Rich, do you remember that doubleheader?

Barry, if I recall correctly, Seaver went on a streak that took him into the World Series of 8 straight complete games in which he gave up a total of 8 earned runs.

Mickey Cochrane did HIT 3 homers in an 1925 game during his rookie season. While David Vargha is a legend in PSA forum circles -- his answer is not the right one

I know that Seaver won his last ten decisions, and that the Mets went from 62-51 to finish at 100-60. And although they only lost 9 games for nearly two months, they were no-hit in one of them- by Bob Moose. I'm doing all that from memory- does it sound right?

And on the subject of no-hitters, legend has it that Doc Ellis threw his no-hitter on LSD. Is that truth or fiction?

The most unappreciated HOF, Edward Trowbridge Collins, Sr. (1906-1930).

OK, as far as longevity, name the only 2 players to hit a HR as a teenager and 40+ ?????

(Oh, and Barry, my friend I was with was a big, big Mets fan, and was so pissed, he wanted to leave. I said, no way, someday I'll be able to say I was at this game. I guess my day has come !!!)

The Phillies scored 9 in the 1st and 7 in the 2nd, so when it's 16-0 after two innings, you don't know whether to leave because the game is over or stay on the hope of watching history. Wish I went to a game like that!

Don Mattingly hit six grand slams in 1987 to establish the major league record (which he now shares with Travis Hafner).

How many grand slams did Mattingly hit in his career?
