Default I know it's early but a little bit about the next national please?

Posted By: Bob

I was wondering for those of you who went to the last one or are familiar with Cleveland, where is the best place to stay to be able to be in walking distance of the show? What good restaurants and places are there to see for a wife who doesn't have any interest in the National?
Any plans on the dinner, even formative stages?
Yeah, I know it's early, but it's been a slow day....

Bob,
The Sheraton is about 1 mile from the convention center, and right next to the airport. That's where I'm staying.

I want to check out the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. As for places to eat, I'm not too sure. Not positive if there's anything really good in Cleveland. haha, just kidding folks!

The convention center is in the middle of nothing. Stay in one of the prime event hotels and there are shuttle buses to the show. Or there were last time around. You can also rent a car and drive over.

Bob,

The IX Center really is in the middle of nowhere. I live in the Cleveland area and have many suggestions for places to eat, visit, etc. There are a number of hotels and restaurants about five miles east of the IX Center in Independence, OH on Rockside Road. If you do a mapquest this area is located where
I-77 and I-480 intersect. If this a vacation do not plan too much time in downtown....not much to do. Anyone that has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Bob -

Thanks for bring this up. I am going this year too
I am going to try to attend the the network 54 dinner, so I want to know as early as possible what the plans are !!!

I've got the same questions as you... places to stay, restaurants, evening activities,... I went to the 1997 national there, but can't remember where I stayed. I had a great time at the national during the day & an equally great time at the nightclubs downtown

Alan

I don't know which hotels are host hotels yet, but from my standpoint, this year I am going to try for a Radisson because they have select comfort beds (the sleep number beds), which is what I have at home and really like.

I generally find that with the National, if you don't have a strong preference, take the most expensive hotel they have as a host hotel and it is usually the nicest experience.

Adam

I am shocked that you wouldn't choose your hotel by selecting the one that will be infested with thousands of teenagers--or was that limited to Anaheim?

I somehow suspect if I am going to dine again with you and Leon, it will be without Jennifer, as I don't think I'll be able to convince her to make this National

What, no Jennifer? Fine then we'll eat without you . Don't you remember that fabulous leg shot you got of me flashing her? One of the shining moments in my stellar career in collecting.....alas, we had a good time and I suspect we will again this year....hope to see everyone there.

Bob- The Sheraton.....

Here's a couple of recommendations for places to eat in Cleveland...

Don's lighthouse in lakewood, close to downtown

http://www.donslighthouse.com/index.html - I had a great filet mignon there..and potatoe crusted salmon...yum

And Shooters on the Water in the Flats have some decent food and you can eat outside during the summer.

Hey John (and others familiar with Cleveland)- My wife laughed at the humor in this thread when I read it to her. I think she is thinking this might be a trip to pass because of lack of wife-friendly things to do while the hubby is busy looking for cardboard. Would you agree?
Bob
P.S. I WILL be there though

Thanks Leon. Great dates!! Couldn't stand the end of month. Probably be driving out in my Jag convertible for a couple of days. Anyone from Chi want to split gas $$ and have the wind blow through your hair?

Looks like the Tribe is out of town that weekend but play an afternoon game on Thursday -- too bad -- last national they had a Saturday night with Fireworks and a late inning win...

I grew up in Cleveland and still go quite a bit on biz .....If you want to make it a good weekend stay downtown and enjoy the restaurants and Rock n Roll HOF --- and just drive back to the national (10-15 min)

The West 6th area - the "warehouse" district is where all the good restaurants and bars are now -- The Flats have gone down hill a bit to say the least and is actually not the safest place in the evening..... The West 6th /warehouse district has great restaurants -Metro , Blue Pointe Grill (awesome food) and the Chop House just a few... IF you take younger ones - check out the Great Lakes Science Center right by RR HOF- it is very worth it

That's my thoughts - I'll be there -- Darrell

But it was pushed back a week so it would not be the same week as the HOF induction in Cooperstown. I'm not sure when the NFL HOF induction is, but as Cleveland is so close to Canton, you might actually have extra FB HOFers around that weekend as well.

Hey Bob and others...not to cast a negative vote for the place that I reside, but Cleveland (relative to other cities) has little to offer. If you are creative and have never been here I am sure that you could fill a couple days with worthwhile activities. I grew up near Pittsburgh (which has a lot to offer) and lived in Boston and Charleston, SC. I am a little city-spoiled. Cleveland is a tough sell. I am looking forward to meeting many of you and as stated before please feel free to contact with questions regarding lodging, etc.

I volunteered last year to lead a trip to the pro football HOF which is about an hour south of the convention center. As the time gets closer I will again extend the offer to interested individuals.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is nice. It's just south of Cleveland. Some nice hikes, historic canals/locks, waterfall, covered bridge, etc.

On the historic side there's the President Garfield Nat'l Historic Site just east of Clevelend. Towards Canton the McKinley monument and presidential library.

The NFL Hall of Fame was already mentioned. On the strange side there's the Goodyear World of Rubber musuem.

For fun, Cedar Point - "Rollercoaster Capital of the World" - is ~60 miles west.

Any recommendations of names & locations (in relation to the Expo center) of music venues (everything from small clubs to stadiums) to see live music at night after the national ? Thanks.

It is called the National. I don't know who has time for anything else while they're at the National. I know I don't. What more could you want besides cards (well, and beer)?
