Default Was Mike Tiernan a Star?

Posted By: Paul

An Old Judge card of Mike Tiernan just closed on ebay for under $100. (I forgot to bid). I looked up his stats and saw that they were pretty impressive, though his career was short. I was just wondering if he was regarded as a star during his career. Or is he one of those players with just a flashy stat or two that comes from playing in a different era?

Paul, I bid on Tiernan (glad you forgot to bid!) as a direct result of discussions on this board about how he was a near-HOFer. This statician actually considers Tiernan the 64th best batter of all-time: http://www.pupress.princeton.edu/chapters/s7932.pdf

As Homer Simpson would say "D'oh!".

But I am a little suspicious of someone who would rank Tiernan above Anson.
