Default High end Mantles on ebay

Have you guys noticed all of the high end Mantles that are up? I haven't been looking much the last few weeks after finishing my run. But there were no PSA 6 and up 51-53 Mantles before. Now there are several of each, including 7s and 8s. Any theories on why that is?

I have not seen these listings and also not watching the market as closely as I had been but since June, prices seem to be coming back down on the stuff that went up. People did some panic buying and now maybe they are doing some panic selling or want to cash out in case prices dip even more? Again, I am spot checking and each time I do I see prices are down significantly.

Just spot checked a card I thought had gone way too high for one so easily available, the Rose 8. They might have been even higher just prior.

I also noticed that as well as what Pokerplyr is mentioning.

Seems just a short while ago, high end cards were few and far between now there seems to be a bunch of them.

With all the pricing chatter in the spring, I'm surprised at the relative quiet accompanying the fairly steep declines in the last month or two. Limited data points below, but these signify a broader trend.

The prices of the Mantles seem to be holding steady. I haven't noticed a drop in any, and especially 52B, and both 53s seem to be increasing. I was just surprised at how many were listed.

As for the 50s and 60s RCs that have dominated price discussions lately it does seem that 7s and 8s have settled back down well below their peak but above previous levels. Pretty much what we all predicted. Especially with Clements, Rose, Reggie, and Frank Robinson. 9s are still going through the roof. 8.5s too.

People like me who forgot why they got out of the hobby are remembering and saying "oh wait they're just cards and spending a ridiculous amount on a fairly common card is probably a pretty dumb idea."

To be fair, the Goodwin Koufax for $80k had a very eloquent description.

Looks like there are also 3 psa 8 51 Mantles up right now including the ones at goldin and goodwin. Any opinions on which is the best example?

Let's play, "Which would you buy?" Try not to let the grade on the slab influence you. Pick #1, 2, or 3. Two are currently up for auction, while the other already sold for $180K. I'll throw in a "Rosen Find" PSA 8 as a point of reference.

Card #2, the SGC centered card, is to me the best of the bunch and the only one on which I would spend money.

The PSA examples have high technical grades based primarily on corners, but to me corners are gravy; centering and image has to be there first.

#1, #2 then #3.

#2 is nicer than #3 but #3 has the cleaner back.

I prefer the deeper colors of #2 compared to #1 but that could be the scan/brightness?

#1's centering is the best and why I chose it. (I would be proud to own either one however!)

(Remember, my eyes are 52 yrs old and I don't wear the proper glasses like I should. )

The image, color, and centering are all better on the second card, the first SGC one. So I would pick #2 as well. I would pick the 51 Mantle PSA 8 up on ebay over the two at Goldin and Goodwin for the same reasons.

You're right. I just looked again and I don't know what I originally saw with the centering on the #1 card?

Is it my eyes, or do both #2 and #3 have a slight tilt or uneven border width top to bottom?

What Dale said. It's hard to make judgments about color when the cards are scanned at different brightness, just look at the difference between the two SGC flips for example. People here seem to be taking the scans at face value and making direct comparisons. No wonder the guys who enhance scans do well.

Now that is funny...By the way, anyone else think the right edge on #2 looks odd? Something does not look right in the front or back scan on that edge. Might be the holder insert obscuring part of the edge...dunno.

While that is true, you usually have to decide if you want to bid at auction based only on the scans provided.

Of course, but it's fairly easy to tell from the flips whether a scan is too bright or (on occasion) too flat. And one can make educated guesses about what the card will actually look like based on the deviation if any in the flip color. Certainly, there is no reason to look at side by side scans and state that the one that is obviously scanned much brighter has better color. I mean just look at the backs of the two SGC 86s, obviously this is not an apples to apples comparison.

I wouldn't know from experience, but would imagine it may be worth a trip to an AH office, or card show that has a card on display, before dropping a couple hundred grand on a card if you're unsure.

I'm with you. I've never bid on anything that expensive. I would certainly like to see it in person first.

OK, I guess most people have had a chance to state their opinion. It's seems that most are saying they would pick #2. Now the reveal. The 3rd Mantle was in the Spring 2016 REA auction, and realized $180K. The other two are currently being auctioned. So now the question is, what do you think #1, the PSA Mantle, will go for at auction? How about #2, the SGC graded example? Do you think the PSA encapsulated Mantle will bring more since it will become part of someone's registry? Thoughts...
