Default help in identifying 2 Vern Stephens cards/photos

Posted By: Vern Sanden

I WAS REFERRED HERE BY ROBERT LIFSON CONCERNING IDENTIFYING A COUPLE OF ITEMS I HAVE. I BELIEVE THEY ARE FROM THE 1940s AND BOTH OF THEM HAVE VERN STEPHENS PICTURED IN HIS ST. LOUIS BROWNS UNIFORM. CHECK THE SCANS: BOTH PICTURES MEASURE APPROXIMATELY 2 3/4" X 3 7/8", BOTH ARE STAMPED ON THE BACK WITH A DIFFERENT NUMBER AND BOTH ARE STAMPED (PASSED BY - U 26787 S - ARMY EXAMINER). I'D APPRECIATE ANY HELP IN IDENTIFYING THESE, THANKS, VERN

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET MY PHOTOS UP WITH THIS POST. ANY HELP?

There were a whole bunch of these (maybe 20-30) of different players all from the same photo series which popped up on ebay last year. I dont believe they are really "cards" but were some type of photo set put out during World War 2, perhaps of Ballplayers who were serving in the military. I seem to remember being outbid on all the commons in the $40 each range and some of the Hall of Famers going for 3X that so I would place the value at about that, $40 each or so and maybe a little more.

They couldn't have been ballplayers in the service because Vern Stephens did not pass his induction physical. He was quite upset about not being able to serve. But I am guessing that they were war year items what with the paper rationing and what I'm guessing as an Army Examiner's checking and approval to make sure no military secrets were given away in the photos.

Sounds good. It is obvious they are a war year issue, and there are several more in the set. I wish I had written down the ones that were offered last year but I did not even think about it at the time. I am sure some others will chime in that might have won a couple of them, but you can be assured there are others in the issue.
