Anyone else watch this yet? It was neat to see how he kept his collection...I had only imagined it before this.

Does anyone know when Mr Carter stopped collecting and why? It was also interesting to hear that he had set up at card shows and sold cards. I did not know that. I also enjoyed his comments about Bill Mastro showing up in the 1970s to their local card auctions and winning every lot.

Many thanks to Doug Allen for his assistance in obtaining this video about Lionel Carter and his collection. I enjoyed it, as would most card collectors. I found his stories about telling his wife that Sunday nights were "card mounting" nights and that he planned on continuing his hobby after marriage entertaining as well.

Thanks to Lionel and his wife for sharing.

Leslie, you need to go to Mastro's website and sign up for the classic collector auction so you can get the catalog.

Yes I watched it today. Interesting, especially when Carter said he could not share his collection because of the value.

i watched it last night, very well done...it is amazing to think (as bill mastro pointed out), that in many cases, no other hands have touched these cards, except for the graders at SGC...Mr. Carter took them out of the packs himself, and straight into the binders...amazing.

Did lionel Carter ever write anything in hobby magazines etc?

So far it seems like he is a hell of a collector, very passionate and with great knowledge of cards.

But Unlike other guys from his era...he did not do much for the hobby itself.

What a great gentleman Lionel seems to be. I see a lot of my grandfather in him. The "old gaurd"....They don't make them like that anymore. Wonderful video.....Awesome collection...

Shoot me an email with your address. Don't worry about postage but I would like it back after you are through with it. I doubt Doug, or Mastro Auctions, would mind if you burned a copy of the dvd for yourself too. Mr.Carter was all about promoting the hobby so in that spirit I think we are safe. Everyone that collects vintage baseball cards should see this video, imho.....You really get to see one (actually 2 with Bill in it) of the hobby pioneers up close and personal....regards

I know Doug Allen said that it was unlikely that Mr. Carter could get to the National, but what a treat that would be if he would show up !!!

I would like to think that Mr. Carter would enjoy talking to Joe Blue Collar Card Collector and share his love for the hobby. Having acquired several of his cards (now encapsulated by SGc as from the Lionel Carter Collection), I know I'd love to sit down with him and just listen to the stories of the early days and his conversations with Jefferson Burdick, Frank Nagy, Buck Barker and others.

was i the only one who noticed that calleocho said, "he did not do much for the hobby itself"?

from what i understand he did a ton of writing in all of the early publications, AND Jefferson Burdick would often go to Carter to study various types of card issues. can anyone else jump in and back me up here?

Did you watch the DVD?

I saw that post immediately. Instead of saying what I thought about the comment (which would have been extremely negative) I decided to post a positive comment. I am right with you though. Mr. Carter was a friend of Burdicks and helped him with the ACC. Mr.Carter also wrote many articles in hobby trade papers too, from what I understand. My guess is that he helped the hobby more than almost anyone on this board.....best regards

I saw where Lionel said he used to write a lot of articles but I haven't personally seen them. I do have quite a few old hobby pubs but they are mostly Bray and Nagy related.....Not sure which ones he wrote for...

I got the impression from watching the video that Lionel Carter was writing 9-10 pages (actually 4-5 pages since he said they were on half page sized paper) and sending out mimeographs (anyone over 45 here remember the old machines where you typed on the special mimeograph paper and then attached it to a drum and turned it to make mimeo copies) to others. I am not sure that they were winding up in trade periodicals or just being sent out to other collectors. I'd like to think he was the forerunner of the Net54 Board, sharing information with collectors, but without the jokes, off-topic threads and flames.

an article that I had from a 1937 Issue of Kaw Chief Stamp Journal from Kansas I believe that Carter wrote. Small 8-12 page publication. Neat item.

Detail on the Batter Up Series.............VERY topical to the Bill Mastro comments.......tough publication to find..........in the article he notes the same 'Mr. Golden' as in the DVD........

Thanks Tom for sharing that with us. How wild it would have been back in the day when no one knew how many cards there were in a set and what names might be in them. We rely so heavily on tradition, time and checklists made long ago that those days seem like lightyears away.

If my math is correct, he would have been in his mid-teens when that article was written. It's amazing that a teenager would have been so driven by the hobby to contribute a column.

It was an honest question...i didnt know if he had written anything or not.

Compared to Burdick , Nagy and other of the pioneers of baseball card collecting he is not the most well known.

I had never heard of him until recently...

Leon when was the first time you heard of him?

I have heard of Lionel Carter for only about 10 yrs (since I started collecting). Since I am interested in the history of the hobby, and not only the cards, he has been a recognized name for me. The reason I took your comment in a somewhat offensive manner is that I had just viewed the DVD of him and he reminded me of my grandfather, rest his soul. I am not sure how to put it any better than my definition of what "the old guard" is. Honest, nice, integrity, etc....I am sending my DVD to Trae this week and if you want to view it I will have him send it to you and you can send it back to me after you view it, if you want? It's worth watching.....as a matter of fact I am going to watch it again before I send it off....best regards

That article is pretty amazing. I wonder how many teenagers today could compose such a cohesive, articulate, well-written article even if they tried.

I rarely bring up older threads but this seemed relevent. If someone would like to see the Carter DVD just email me your address and I will send it to you. I just got it back from Trae. I think it's a very good video. Also, I just got in a group of about 15 of Lionel's cards from ebay auctions. As is mentioned in the video they are nice. Most of the ones I got are in SGC 20-30 holders and they really do all present extremely well for their grade. No hype here. You can tell they were hand picked by Mr.Carter. best regards

Sorry to bring up a really old thread, but all of this Lionel Carter talk in recent weeks has really got me interested in learning more about him.

Does anyone still have a copy of The Lionel Carter Collection DVD mentioned in this thread?

I'd love to borrow it (or buy it) from someone who still may have it.

I have a copy of the CD. Run time is 28 minutes long.
I thought of e-mailing you a video file, but I don't think
that's going to work. File probably going to be too big.

I just checked CD. Its a 1 gig VOB (video) file, way too
large to e-mail.

It would be great if someone could upload it to YouTube. Would do it myself but I left my CD, along with about a half-ton of Mastro catalogs, back in da Islands when I moved to the Mainland.

Folks,

I'm working on converting the CD into an MP4 format. If I could get it
converted, the file may be small enough to send in an e-mail. Please
bear with me. Soon as it's done burning I'll check to see if it converted
properly. I'll let everybody know in a little bit.

All,

The file did convert into MP4 format. Unfortunately, even as a
compressed ZIP file it's too large to e-mail. Sorry,
