Nice one Brian!
Well, well Happy New Year! So I picked up a 2 card sub from the Post Office today. Took advantage of PSA Value Plus Special in December and got these door to door in two weeks. A couple of additional surprises. Card grades came in about as expected and was very pleased to see the continuance of PSA using the half grade when warranted. Secondarily; this is not only a 9 digit cert number and a lighthouse holder but a new holder combo for M101 and similar sized cards. Just a bit thicker, almost like it is 3 slabs of plastic in one. The biggest surprise is the new addition of a plastic stabilizer insert for the card to rest in with plastic border stops roughly sized to house this size issue. No real chance now for the card to roam around too much like it did before using the baggie without any restraints inside the holder. This is a much better thought out combo holder. I hope this insert is a permanent addition. Now for the cards. The Pep Young Weil Baking card PSA 2.5 grade is pretty right on. The Famous and Barr Oldring (Charles Albert Bender's personal catcher for many years) came in a nice deal from our very own Brian Van Horn. Thanks Brian. PSA treated this one fairly too. Happy to have these back from PSA to start the New Year. RayB

Cool theatre card. Looks like it's cut from a larger full ticket item of some kind. I wonder what the backs looked like all together.

Nice to see the Kings Theatre "cards" back in circulation. I say "card", as the Ward is one of the few that had creases that generally matched up on the front and back. Many/most had heavily creased fronts with seemingly pristine backs. FWIW, There were 18 Kings cards in a group of 34 cards that sold in one eBay lot in late 2008.
I did quite a bit of research on Kings Theatre back in the day - none of it survived a system crash a few years back, and I have never revisited it. For the curious, a google search starting with "Kings Theatre St Louis" gets you to lots of good info, beginning with the overview: https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/10802. Old issues of "Reel Journal" from the 20's used to/may-still be available on issuu.com. I went though most of the ones from late 1920 though the end of 1923 (that was all they had), looking for tidbits. Oddly interesting glimpses into moviehouse goings-on back in the 20's. If I recall, the owner (W. Goldman) lost a young son in a tragic accident at the theatre and never really recovered. Various St Louis history/reminiscence sites also have first-hand and family recountings of the theatre and surrounding area. Sorry I don't have any of that research anymore, or I'd share more details. All I still have is images of the cards. -- Mike |

Great looking card! I've collected cards for 40+ years now and have still never owned a '38 Goudey. I need to change that. |

I absolutely love the 33 and 34 Goudey set and I finally decided to give this set a shot. With only 48 cards I figure that I would be happy calling mine "complete" at 46 since I doubt I'll be dropping $6k+ to get the Dimaggio's in a 1 grade!

In 1938 Johnny Vander Meer threw consecutive no hitters. Probably won’t happen again. Hard to get a 1938 card of his. Picked this up last week.

Boy oh Boy (as Grandpa Gross used to say) ...... some mighty pick ups to start 2025 !!!!
Now here's Jimmy "Bruno" Blocke, who may not seem to be as big a deal, but is. He is one of the toughest Recruit commons in the set. To the extent that I one time thought he might be the last card I needed. I can't thank TBob enough for making him available to me ...... up14.jpg Now, you may know me: I love cards with "character" -- redemption punches, back stamps, and occasional writing. This adds to that, as this is my first "typewriter card" ............. love it .................. Fun, fun, Scott |

January Pick Up Shout Outs
A Couple new T206s to the collection from a wanted add on the BST.
Thanks to member Seablaster who offered up the Foster and who also has an ebay store. Karthik is a very trustworthy board member to do business with. Also thanks to parkerj33 for the Shaughnessy. Jim is also a very trustworthy member to do business with. Another flawless transaction! A side note thank you to Leon, his team, or at least his firewall/safe guard system that is in place on our board. I do not understand how all this works, but I did receive private messages from SO CALLED MEMBERS zgordon356 and leonardcohen2211 which both offered me to contact their uncle's cousin's nephew's brother through email because they had cards I was looking for... blah, blah, blah. Now of course, I'm not foolish enough to do that, but within a few hours on the days that I got these private messages on, these so called new members - who just joined those days of course- were BANNED by the Net 54 Safeguards. Thank you again for trying to watch out for our safety on Net 54 Leon!!! Again, be cautious out there on the BST everyone and deal with trustworthy sellers like the above members! Take Care, Tim Kindler |
