Default July Pick-Ups

The good news regarding the Jacksonville monthly show is that it has expanded to two rooms and 70 tables. The bad news regarding the Jacksonville monthly show is that it's almost all modern cards, and most of the dealers that carry vintage bring the same old tired inventory. First time dealer had these three 1962 Topps Rookie Parade cards marked $20 each. I mean I already have them but these are getting tough to find and look good in the duplicates box. So I got the "how much for all three" discount, and paid $35, a good price I think. These are the only cards I bought all show, disappointing.

Nice!

I'm not super-familiar with the 62 set...What makes those Rookie Parade cards tougher to find?

I put what I thought was a cheap opening bid on this 62 Frank Robinson ($10), and won it at the opening bid. Worn corners and a nice scuff on the surface, but still presents well. I may upgrade at some point, but it's a card I'm happy to own.

Picked up this 65 Frank Robinson from a net54 member earlier this week. This makes 12 of 19 on my Frank Robinson set.

Oh you know. Just your average day at the LCS. Trade credit from modern stuff and $200 later, and I am the owner of these.

Wow! How much credit on top of the $200? That’s a nice haul!

I had $250 in credit from trading in modern inserts refractors game used etc.. So I spent $450 in all. The Mantle-Aaron, Drysdale and Aaron were $100 each. The Killebrew was $150. I know I overpaid for the Drysdale but it's nice to get a HOFer RC

Yeah, probably a slight overpay for the Drysdale, but you more than made up for it on the others, unless there are creases that don’t show up in the photos. Overall, a great buy, especially given that you were trading modern shiny objects.

A bit OC/MC, but still a bit nicer than my overall set which ranges from G to VG (and some too good...lol) Love adding Campy cards to the binders, something special about them...

Just need one more card for my 54 Bowman set...Mr. Willie Mays...

Received today. This is what Bill looks like just before his release for time served.

2 member pick ups and 1 from the outside world. All 3 on my checklist and kind of tough to find for a guy with centering ocd.

Beautiful cards. I was a couple hours late on that 63 Kaline, otherwise it would be part of my centering-focused collection. great buy!

Yeah, I missed the Kaline too, but I did get the 63T Santo. Thanks, Phil, for leaving that one.

Speaking of well-centered Kaline cards!!

I'm happy to get these recent pickups in hand. I overpaid BADLY on the 56, but as a collector I'm fine with overpaying for a card that I can enjoy for many years. As for the 71, I've found with how tough they are grading them now, I rather enjoy mid-grade examples.

That's a nice 56 Kaline Rugby, that one is next on my list. That 63 Kaline was a little difficult to find centered.

Glad you picked up the Santo Al, the 63 Banks was a sweet card too.

Lots of great cards already...love the Banks' and the Kalines...I'm in the market for his 54 Topps...

The last few 54 Bowmans have been tricking in as my set is almost complete. Urgency on getting all the Minoso cards before they really start jumping...already seeing it...love this card -

Don't wanna be 'that guy,' but this Mr. Cub looks a heckuva lot better than only a 5, so I grabbed him up...

Default 66 Clemente

Picked this up at Chantilly. Looks undervalued at $70. Touch on one corner. Great surface. Centering is what it is but $70 for this vs $350 for PSA 6 or 7 is a no brainer. Its a camera phone shot, looks great in person.

Lots of really nice cards in here already! I have another copy of this Jackie, but when I saw this one I gambled on a low (but not insultingly low) offer that was accepted. Very happy to have this example.

Default Great looking cards!

Great looking cards in this thread for sure. I haven't posted in a while since I have been working on sets but I had a good couple of days at the mail box this week. I know the Rose is off center but I find myself leaning more to good corners anyway so I found it on EBAY and bought it pretty cheap. The Robinson is a little off center as well but for a '57, the corners are sharp.

A few odds and ends:

Mid Grade 65 Banks

This 1977 Booger brings me to 10 out 16 on his set.

I've been outbid on a decent mid-grade copy of a 49 Furillo RC at least 15 times, so I'm happy to finally add this.

Beautiful Jackie - can't believe how nice the edges look along the bottom right. Those black edges can be brutal but yours is probably the best I've seen on a '53 Jackie of PSA 7 grade or below. Well done and congrats!

Thanks! That was a bit draw for me too. I’m very happy with this example in a 4.5. Mid grade vintage is so much fun. Every time I start buying modern stuff I end up selling to come back to these wondering cards.

Finally found a centered 67 Aaron, I was beginning to think they didn't exist, also can never pass up a nice Clemente card.

That 67 Aaron is gorgeous.

Thanks, much like the 73 Clemente you just don't find that card centered. I don't even know how many I looked at before this one popped up, but if you wait long enough your card will appear when ready.

A couple recent wins.

Everyone has sets that just don't peak their interest and capture them the way that others do. Everyone's taste is different, and there's nothing wrong with that. For me, 1955 Bowman is one of them. Just never really did anything for me. After owning a few of them as part of player sets that I'm working on, i will say it's growing on me.

I'm getting down to the nitty gritty on my Brooks set. I've been focusing on centering as much as possible, but some cards are just so rare to see with decent centering. Like that 67 Aaron or a 73 Clemente, or a 57 Mantle. I haven't bid on many of these 59 Brooks cards because I just haven't come across many that are centered.

Went to a small (only about 75 tables) local, new show today. This was only the 3rd or 4th show they've put on. And I got some more 58s to add to my set. In addition to what's pictured, I picked up about 200-250 commons, semistars and teams.

..upgraded some of my New York Giants and Yankees .....that new Berra is possibly the first centered sharp-cornered and focused/registered 1957 Topps raw number two Yogi Berra I've ever found in many years of watching ; really gorgeous in hand , my scanning skills notwithstanding..........so very few focused Berra '57's out there......he's still a mug shot , but a decent-looking one finally...

At the National yesterday, I saw a guy looking through a good sized stack of 57T Berras at a table in the 100 aisle. Was that you?

Default East Coaster Stick-in-the-mud

..Hi Al , no not me in Chicago......."a stack of 1957 Topps number two Yogi Berra " ......sweet mother of pearl I can't imagine any one person having that many of one fairly pricey card... I do all the bigger East Coast shows , or DID , before this life-changing event virus ......looking forward to "The Philly Show" coming up....stay healthy , MG54
