Default Best FB Card Price Guide

Can one of you direct me to a good FB guide? I am looking for something that is comprehensive pre-1980's. Is Becket's big guide the best one or are there others. Pricing is less of an issue than information. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Beckett over Standard. Standard has not updated much of their information (relative to vintage sets) for years.

Thanks-seems like its the same on the baseball side with the vintage at Standard Catalog. Maybe with Bob returning we'll see some updates, etc.

I think Carl's book that he self-published is excellent.

I refuse to buy any more of these "comprehensive" price guides, until at least one of them at least mentions the color variations on the 1963 Topps set. Or maybe they do now? I haven't bought one since '05.

Ramscollector:

Yes, that is what I am looking for, sonmething with the level of detail that gets into variations, short prints, etc. I'll try to scope out a Beckett the next time I am at B&N and see if the 63 variatiosn are mentioned.

The large Beckett is by far the best and virtually complete. I have seen certain dealers use the SCD Standard catalogue in an effort to low ball sellers at shows because its so out of date. As far as graded cards, PSA SMR is best...but it only carries mostly mainstream stuff.

I'm looking at the newest Beckett right now and yes, they do mention color/tint variations in the description of the set. They don't refer to the variations scarcity/value - only that they exist.

Do any of the comprehensive price guides list issues by year, then by manufacturer?

Both Beckett & Standard that I have list issues first by manufacturer then by year.

Its frustrating to use if a hobbyist is trying to collect all the sets issued within a given year.

I haven't bought a FB guide in probably ten years but I thought the Standard Guide used to have a chrono listing of all the sets in index form in the back.

Picked up the Big Beckett-you need a magnifying glass to read it but it has the info I want.
