Anyone Heard These Stories?

I don't have any physical evidence so I will protect the "innocent/guilty", by not naming names, but I have heard the following stories for years, from various sources, and was wondering if anyone else is aware of them? |

The New York Public Library actually has a book that lists all the items that are no longer part of the collection when it was inventoried in 1922. The pieces no longer in the collection are all significant team and Hall of Famer CdV's and cabinet cards. Draw your own conclusions. |

for one of the pickier HOF signers who wouldn't sign bats with multi-autographs. The matting covered the other signature. The collector pulled off the matting in front of the signer after he had signed to show him he had been had. Ruined it for everyone else from that day forward. |

Lefty O'Doul's restuarant in San Francisco used to have a great collection of pictures, sigs and memorabilia all over the place, but over the years, pretty much of it was stolen. So so food there, but still lots of neat pics and memorabilia there. |

My understanding is that O'Doul's son sold off the memorabilia (mostly period photos) and replaced it with reprints. |

I tried to convince them that donating the scrapbooks was pointless, but to no avail. The Burdick collection is a perfect example where so many people wanted to see the baseball cards that they just got fed up showing them. Once word gets out that a library or museum has those cards, they will be bombarded relentlessly by people who want to make an appointment to see them. Then little by little, cards will mysteriously disappear. Bad idea on their part, but I couldn't change their minds. |

The story as I heard it involved many more items than those baseballs of Walter Johnson's. The Hall of Fame did not want negative publicity so they did not pursue a possible prosecution. |

The negative publicity, as well as the fear they will lose contributors, is what deters all museums and libraries from pursuing stolen merchandise. |

I'm not sure if this occurred at the same time as the signed ball theft, but I've also heard stories about original photos (can't remember if they were signed or not), that were stolen from the HOF. These were stamped on the back and some did make there way in to the hobby, often with the stamp altered/covered. I don't recall whether or not any of these photos were recovered by the HOF. I'm not sure exactly where I read about this, I think Cycleback.com may have been one of the places. |

I was a forensic accountant / fraud investigator for a number of years before returning to school. It is with great chagrin that I report that I worked on a least four not-for-profit cases whereby the perpetrator took between $150,000 and $250,000 from the charity for personal gain, lifestyle, etc. |

I had not heard that about the HOF photos. I have been told by people associated with museums that theft is an issue. To what size of an issue I don't know. I also know that a lot of donations end up in cardboard boxes in a back room. If you donate your grandpa's high school baseball photos and jersey to the Hall of Fame Museum they're probably not going to display them on the wall. Though your local library might. |

The way I heard the Hall of Fame story was that a sizeable number of signed photos were stolen. Three different people that I know personally, they all verified this independent of each other, bought photos with white out on the back from the same person. They removed the white out and underneath was printed "Property of Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown" or something like that. |
