I seen recently a Jim Horne 1977 Zeenut book sold on eBay, how rare are these, are there different editions and what is the demand?

One edition. No authorized reprints that I know of but someone was making copies for years and selling them (not sure they had permission to reprint his work)

Great book that was influential in establishing the checklist of the Zeenut sets in the late 1970’s. Some additions since then but not a ton. A lot of the info in there has been incorporated into other books so may not be necessary to own. I have an original and a “reader” copy that I make notes in.

I just looked at the ended listing in ebay and that is NOT an original but one of the “copies” as the copies were made of an original collector’s copy with the same checklist additions that had been added.

He didn't do it to make money off it, he just put the material out there for anyone who wanted it. Didn't have an issue with others copying the material but didn't authorize them selling copies either.

Originals are priceless in my opinion

The original edition was released in 1977 with a few supplemental pages over the next few years as additions to the checklist were confirmed. The original has comb binding and a green cover. Production was quite limited, though Brian could confirm with his dad how many were printed. In the late 90's / early 2000's there were more than a dozen 'new' and serious Zeenut collectors and I did make copies for them at no charge. At least one of those individuals copied my copies and began selling them. As Rhett mentions, most of the information has been incorporated into modern checklists, though it still remains as the foundation research project on the series. At some point an updated work , including photo-checklist , player identities and marketing / background information tables would be a nice project, similar to the magnificent work of Richard Masson, Jay Miller and Joe Gonsowski's work on the Old Judge series. However, as they will attest, these projects are money losers, despite the claims of many "supporters" that they would buy one. .... As far as values of the originals are concerned, I've sold unmarked copies in the last few years for around $100, and marked copies for around half of that. I should add that my 'original' is barely intact from overuse, but as Brian states, it is priceless.

These Zee-Nut or Zeenut cards are really quite interesting. As others have said, before the Dodgers and Giants moved west, in the absence of MLB, the old PCL was treated as MLB equivalent on the left coast. I might have to take a brief hiatus from 1962 Topps and acquire a few of these. It appears they can be had reasonably if you're not concerned about condition, and I am not.

I grew up in Florida and saw plenty of T210's and T209's growing up but had never even heard of a Zee-Nut until 2015 when I got back into collecting after a 20 or so year hiatus. Thus they have a completely exotic edge to them for me. And the community (Mark Macrae, Rhett, etc) has always been really helpful with questions and wantlist. I feel like they've slowly gotten more difficult to ascertain in the 8 years I've been collecting them---curious if some of the more senior Zee-Nut collectors feel the same, and would also be very curious to hear some Z tales from decades past----huge collection finds, horse swapping tales, etc
