Default 2007 SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards

Posted By: leon

So I just received my big book from SCD. Looks like Bob and company have done another outstanding job on the book. Many of the prices are far more in line with the market. There are some that I think might have gotten bumped up above the market. A few examples might be.... M116 Matty blue backgound- vg $3000.....The unique Herpolsheimers 1921 issue...commons at $450....The M117 Sporting Times commons in vg at $6000 (close on this one)....Then there are others that haven't quite got their fair share.....E90-3 Gandil in vg $685 (I will take a dozen please). The Allegheny Card Co cards ..commons in vg at $450....HOF'ers at $525....(another dozen please)..M131 Baltimore News cards at $300 in vg for commons..... Prices really changed a lot, is I guess, the biggest difference I see. Will the market react to the guide or will it continue to be spastic? I know I rarely go by "book" prices but will it affect prices? regards

I'm sure a lot of dealers aren't to happy to see the big jump in prices since this means that they can no longer justify their lowball offers. Bumped up prices might have a bit of a cooling effect on prices and slow things down. When prices were low across the board, people pretty mcuh bid what it took to win. Now, with more realistic prices noted, people might start thinking that once it gets around book price, they aren't going to go so gung ho anymore. It also will probably bring out a lot of cards. These extra cards helping to slow down prices a bit.

I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

If the market ever levels off a bit, the catalog prices will actually be more accurate. If the market continues at this frenetic pace, the yearly books will always lag behind.

I thought it was funny that the M131 Cy Young is listed at less than the E94 Cy Young. It's also strange that most N173 Hall of Famers are listed as only slightly more valuable than N172s. I think what has happened is that the less common sets were not updated as accurately because there are fewer sales to report.

In some instances, the discrepencies are pretty funny. The W600 Burkett with St. Louis is listed at 30K because that's what one sold for recently. The W600 Burkett with Boston is listed at about $3K. The Boston variation has not even been confirmed to exist, so there were no sales to rely on in preparing the Catalog. As a result, the default price for Hall of Famers in the set was used.

An example that's a little more frustrating to me is the very rare M101-5 Bobby Wallace. It's listed at $5K, presumably because of a sale in the last year. But the exact same card with the Standard Biscuit back (which I own) is listed at $600. If anything, the Standard Biscuit card is rarer than the blank back, but there have been no recent sales so the price was not updated.

Having said all that, I'm not bashing the book at all. Overall, I agree that Bob did a fantastic job updating prices and including new discoveries. In my opinion, it's that second thing (including new discoveries), that's most important.
