I just got this, as I’ve always thought it was a beautiful card. It has the boldness of the ‘52 Topps with the boyish exuberance of the ‘54 Bowman (which is the best looking Mantle, IMO). It was on eBay with bad pics that made it look faded. As you can see, it’s most certainly not. I’m elated with this one.

Wow, that's an awesome card for sure. Well done!

Default Cards This Week

It was a good week at the mail box for me. I got another Clemente and checked a bucket list item off by getting a Ryan rookie. I know the Ryan is OC but the corners are sharp and the surface is awesome. Also, I am thankful that I have wife that lets me spend money on this hobby. Thanks!

Default Scarce Teddy

Was content to consider the set complete with a #66 Piersall for the past 30 years. But, recently decided to splurge on this guy for a few more nickels than I would have paid at the mom&pop back in '54. So now, the Splinter is the only guy in a slab in my ex/mt set, but I guess he looks OK.

Default February pickups

Late February randomness. I will forever be a fan of decent looking midgrade stuff that does not break the bank:

Not HOFers, but a couple of centered cards for the 52T set that I'm working on...

Default 1949 San Francisco Seals Tour of Japan

A couple of additions this month. A Gene Brocker menko card, and a ticket stub to the first game of the tour. October 15, 1949 San Francisco Seals vs. Yomiuri Giants from Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo. The Seals defeated the Giants 13-4.

Bradley, that may be the most centered ‘55 Topps I’ve ever seen. Wow. And I love that Berra too, Dave. Such a great pose.

Thanks, Jarrod! I try to seek out centered cards if possible. The vibrant color in this card is also stunning.

I knew damn well I was overpaying for this card, but the centering isn't too bad, the corners are magnificent, and I really think it's time to climb aboard the Ryan Express before you're left holding the bag in 'High Price Station' (wow, that was quite a reach with that metaphor). On a side note, if you check out the supposed 'equivalent' straight graded cards (in PSA 7), they almost always have worse centering than this one...

1972ryan595psa9oc02.jpg

...and if you read the words of wisdom at the bottom of my signature, it'll tell you exactly what happened next. A week and a half later, another 1972 Topps #595 Nolan Ryan PSA 9 OC came up for auction and sold for more than twice (2.26 times) as much as what I overpaid for this guy. Yowza!!

It's also really difficult to find this card with zero tilt, which I think you have managed to do. Nice!

And here they are. One silver lining of the recent card price inflation is that I discovered this set. I wouldn’t have looked seriously at it if the 48/49 Leafs for these players hadn’t doubled (tripled?). In hand, they are awesome. Their slapdash nature is charming, and they feel suffused with “oldness.” The tinting is reminiscent of some of the old caramel cards — E94, E98, etc. I love them.

Nice cards. Is that Mays more OC on the back than the front? It may be close to the standard for the front for a 6, (80/20) - but honestly given PSA's normal practice, I think that's kind of harsh to give the OC qualifier to if they are talking about the front only. Grades below 7 getting the OC are kind of rare to start with, because the requirement gets easier.
