Default Wax boxes

Hey, new user here.......

Do any of you guys have a reliable seller or two to buy wax boxes from? I bought an '82 Topps box recently that was BBCE authenticated and actually, I found it to likely have been compromised. I wasn't alone either. Another eBay user said the same thing about the same box he bought with BBCE auth. I'm not out to rip BBCE though, in fact I'm sure most of their products are fine. I've also heard about sellers altering the wrapping after receiving back from BBCE.

It's well known that fraud is part of the hobby, sadly, and the risk increases with more valuable boxes.

So, just looking for a seller that you guys have actually pulled gradable cards from in some consistent way so we can give that honest person more business. Thanks for any progressive input.

I have purchased from mintsportscards.com. I always get good stuff from them and their prices are awesome. Check them out and you can see for yourself.

Did you email/contact Steve @ BBCE? Steve is very helpful!

Was the box one of the newer BBCE wrapped boxes with their logo on the cellophane?

I know some people have tried to pass off boxes as BBCE authenticated boxes by simply faking he label/sticker that they use but they did not have the newer BBCE logo wrapping.

What makes you think the box was tampered with? *edit to ad* Who did you purchase the boxes from??

I would also check out what board member tsalem has to offer over at http://www.opcbaseball.com/.

Sorry to hear you might have been taken on the box, wishing you better luck on your future purchases!

Scott

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the reply -

Several factors led me to the conclusion I reached.

a) stickers missing from 3 packs.
b) gum stains on cards in center of the pack(s).
c) not one semi star let alone HOF/RC etc.
d) certain packs with strong adhesive, others nearly fell open.
e) soft corners on several cards. strong center creasing on 2 of them.
f) intangibles/other characteristics (experience)

I've opened over 50 boxes in the past, and this one felt like a safe bet of being a fraud job. I've only had one other with bad issues, but not this obvious. To answer your question - yes it was strong plastic with company logo. I would guess it was not tampered post-sealing, but cannot say for sure.

Yeah, I talked to Steve. While he did reply I didn't feel any concrete proof is offered by their services. He would not answer certain questions. I understand you want to protect the business, but I still don' t understand the high accolade they receive. There are no physical tests done...fingerprints/DNA etc. (packs should be machine finished and untouched). They also take no responsibility for errors (we're human, etc.)...and they are not paid anything if a box is rejected. When in doubt.....

That's just not enough for me as a serious buyer. I also found one other person in my first hour of searching who stated on eBay feedback "not one decent card, first and last time I buy from BBCE". Item in question was also an '82 Topps Box ~ coincidentally? Unsure, but its enough to make me prefer an honest seller (buyer of sealed cases, etc) to form an honest partnership with in the future. Please refer me

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I have purchased from BBCE in the past and even though I am not a big time buyer they have always treated me great and I never had any issues with product purchased from them. But nobody is perfect I guess eh? I wonder how hard it would be to replicate the plastic wrap?

When I first got back into the hobby I was really interested in going back and picking up wax boxes from my early collecting days (81-87) but the prices really sky rocketed on a lot of the stuff. I think the prices being charged for 80s unopened is pretty crazy right now. With high prices comes greed and people looking to take advantage of others. Sad.

Sorry again that you got taken, sounds like it was def. a bad box though.

Take care,

Scott

This is a pretty old experience but one that led me not to buy from bbce again. In the late 1990s I bought 2 1978 topps football wax boxes. No Dorsett, no stall worth, no staubach, no Payton in either.

I purchased a '75 wax tray from BBCE and it had definitely been tampered with. No evidence on the outside packaging, but the cards were VG/EX to EX, some with creases.

With all the recent bogus cellos that has passed by them, I agree with Jared - I don' t understand the high accolade they receive.

Thanks for understanding & support guys...yeah, getting burned is lame as hell. Its all about integrity and where do you find it? Still striving for that in a seller. I'm sure many collectors are happy with BBCE as they get prize cards, etc. But, consider the fact that IF anyone over there (or selling the box to the eBay seller or the eBay seller himself) is tampering...some are better than others. How many boxes could you have gotten 3 or 4 of those prize cards? If someone picks out a few big cards from each box, they'd probably slip under the radar and make a fortune....

Steve is a top notch dealer. You should try calling him and discussing the matter. As we are ALL human errors can be made. Enjoy the hobby.

Taxman, if you scroll up you'll see he's already talked to Steve. We all make errors, it's how we fix them that counts. Hopefully Steve will back up his authentication.
You can always try and buy from Fritsch. Little incentive there to tamper with stuff, but from what I've heard also not easy getting them to actually follow thru on a sale.
