Default Today is the 49th anniversary of Nolan Ryan's 2nd career no-hitter- his best!

California Angels RHP Nolan Ryan's pitched his 2nd career no-hitter on July 15th, 1973 against the DET Tigers.

This was Nolan's 2nd no-hitter in two months in his amazing 1973 season in which he also set the single season MLB record of 383 K's.

This was absolutely his best no-hitter out of his seven career no-no's.
17 K's in 9 innings and according to one quote from the Tigers "He had everything..."
It was so futile that Tigers 1st baseman Norm Cash came out to take his at bat with a table leg as a joke in the 9th inning. When Home Plate umpire Ron Luciano asked him to get a real bat, Cash exclaimed "that it didn't matter because he wasn't going to get a hit anyway".

Here's a toast to Nolan Ryan the All-Time No-Hit King!

Ticket stub from the 2nd no-hitter
No-hit catcher Art Kusnyer's glove from the early portion of Ryan's 2nd no-hit game

All of these are from my personal collection

Scott :

These are the kind of posts I love....Curious as to why Kusyner changed gloves mid game? Did you obtain it from him?

Thanks

Bill

How great was Nolan and what a class act. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show these. Thanks for the thread!

Hi Bill.
Thank you.
The glove did originate from Kusnyer and came with his letter stating that it was used in his 2nd no-hitter.
I bought this in a Hunt All Star game auction many years ago.

I don't know for sure why he changed catcher's mitts, but I do know that Nolan was throwing extra hard this day by all accounts. My mitt has a 1 1/2" tear in the pocket and I have always thought that he switched mitts because of this, probably to prevent further pain and injury.
FYI, I'm friendly with a former Angels bat boy that was a member of the 1973 team. He spoke to Nolan about there being two mitts being used in the game and Kusnyer confirmed that mine was used in the 1st inning before switching mitts.

Thanks for posting this Scott!
I actually have the full DET Free Press newspaper covering Ryan's 2nd no-hitter,
but admittedly have not looked at it in maybe 20 years.
