Default 2020 purchases

Being a native of Rockford, Illinois--I have focused in the last several years collecting Rockford Peaches items....this year I was able to add 2 nice items to my collection...a Graig Kreindler painting of Dottie Kamenshek and an original Rockford Peaches hat thanks to Ange Armato who let me purchase it.

Anyone else have other Peaches items....please contact me! Thanks.

I have two this year. In April I purchased Barry Larkin's on-field celebration 1990 WS Champs hat, signed, with a COA from Sports Gallery. A board member has a Reds item sale every opening day. Really cool item.

Around the same time, a board member surprised me and sent me this 1919 Colliers cover of the Reds / White Sox WS. I love it! I guess you can't be a real Reds collector and not have something from their first WS championship.

My 2 favorite pickups this year. McGinty and Mcgraw on cover of this 1904 scorecard. And second is this 1959 NFL championship program signed by Both the Colts and Giants. This came from the collection of Baltimore Sportscaster Ted Patterson. Always loved this cover.

Default Favorite 2020 pickups

FYI, I always look forward to this thread as well every year.
I managed to find a few really good ones in 2020 that I especially like. All of these are uber-rare pickups.
They are:
- A full, unused ticket to Carl Erskine's 2nd no-hitter
- A circa 1950's signed game used bat from Virgil "Fire" Trucks. Trucks hurled 2 no-hitters in 1952 while he was a member of the DET Tigers, making him one of only a handful of players to ever accomplish this rare feat...
- Game used, vintage signed and inscribed ball from HOF Jim Palmer's no-hitter in 1969
- The 1915 Federal League Annual Pass that I picked up this month in REA

Happy holidays to everyone on net54!

I had a decent year, collecting wise. Pucked up a few vey nice Gehrig photos, but my favorite 2 items are below

1) 1934 Goudey signed by Frank Grube. He died in 1946 making him the second person in the set, behind Gehrig(1941), to pass away. I have only seen this card signed one other time

2) Baseball signed by Kevin Costner with "For Love of the Game" inscription. IMO, it is one of the best underrated baseball movies, and a personal favorite of mine. Costner has been in so many baseball movies that i wanted a ball signed by him and this was perfect.

Thank you.
Believe it or not, it already is.
The ticket, of course is an impossible find. I have exactly ZERO Negro League no-hitter tickets in my collection.
I thought for one millisecond that maybe an autograph might be findable, but nooooo...
Pete Dowling died in a train track accident in 1905.
Life is a bitch, and then you die...

That Peaches cap would be my pick-up of the year. Who made it, and is there a label inside?

Default 2020 Memorabilia

The company is called Wilbac MFG Co. out of Chicago on one larger tag. A smaller second tag says inside the cap says it has been fabric treated and is shower proof (LOL)... Ange signed the inside and also added Rockford Peaches several years ago it appears....(picture #1).
Picture number #2 is a later cap which has the same maker/style inside from the Barbara Thompson estate. The only difference is that there was never a red "R" on the front of this cap. Seeing as where it came from and they match--I have to think it is also a game used cap from Rockford. Thanks.

Although this has been a miserable year on many levels I did have a good year in my small niche. My best pick up was this 1971 Pirate World Series ring (Staff Member). The large street banner hung in Pittsburgh welcoming the Bucs home. There are three version I now have two of them. The hat belonged to Frank Oceak and was worn during the 1971 season, the 1971 Clemente team issued Action Photo is a rare issue. I also upgraded my 1971 Rawlings WSSGlove box to a near mint one. There are three known examples of this box (thanks Rhys).

The Superstar Program Is from Sept 24, 1971 the Mets hosted the Bucs at Shea. That night Puerto Rican politicians, dignitaries, celebrities, and NY businessmen sponsored Roberto Clemente Night. The Mets Spanish speaking radio station WADO 1280 hosted the event. These programs, judging by the contents, were given out to guests invited to attended a private dinner for Clemente held at the NY Commodore Hotel following the game. I was unaware that this program existed until I stumbled across this one. Call me crazy but sometimes it seems these items we hunt often find us instead of the other way around.

Thanks to everyone in the Net54 community for the much needed distraction this year. It’s hard to believe next year is the 50th anniversary of my beloved Champion Pirate club. Lordy I’m getting old.

Being a '60 Pirates collector, you had me at Forbes Field but slayed me at Rocky Nelson. That is so cool!

I agree. Wonderful additions. Even when I was about 8 years old, when my dad was driving us to Forbes Field, I remember seeing those signs saying "Follow Me to Forbes Field" and thinking that there weren't really enough of those signs along our route to guide anybody who didn't know how to get there. But still a very desirable relic from our historic past.

Is that the Forbes sign they had in the Lelands auction? I love those signs I think the graphics are amazing. I have a negative with three people in a convertible sports car with one of those strapped to the trunk during the celebration. If you are interested in a scan (gratis)PM me your email. It would look great as a companion piece.

Compared to all the colorful stuff that you guys added this year, my new bats are not all that photogenic. Still, they are what they are. It turns out that in 2020 I added more bats to my collection than I realized. These 2 stand out. The first is a George Grantham gamer that I have been hunting ever since I turned one down in 1994 because I wasn't willing to pay the extra $100 that the dealer wanted for it. The second is a Lloyd Waner bat that matches his "PBOR" for 1928. These are among the tougher Pirates bats from the 20's.

Probably my favorite pickups for the year, and likely will remain in my top 5 all time. A couple of game worn jerseys from the Japanese-American leagues, an all but forgotten chapter in baseball history.

1930's(?) Brigham City Niseis, and Japanese Amateur Athletic Union (I think).

The Nelson uniform will pair nicely with my 1960 Tom Cheney home uniform.

I bought the sign from a fellow collector and it's in fantastic shape. I think you sent me a photo already.

Maybe not colorful, but man, those are total eye candy to me!!!

Default 2020 Pick Ups

Despite the obvious travails we've collectively endured (and still are) in 2020, I did manage a few acquisitions that fit into both ends of my collecting spectrum...19th C. and 1950s NY Yankees.

The trophy bat was an early 2020 pick up, while the CDV was a late summer acquisition. Aside from being an outstanding image, its particularly special and extraordinarily meaningful as it was the last item my father and I talked about and added to the collection before his passing in September.

The Mantle glove stands out as the finest example of a 1960 model MMP that I've see to date, and fits nicely with the VERY humble, collector grade (euphemism for low grade) Mantle card collection that I've been piecing together over COVID. I need just two more examples to complete a full run of his Bowman/Topps bubble gum cards...it'll now take me the rest of my life to do that ( I mean, afford that )!!

Anyway, I wish you all happy holidays, Merry Christmas, and my sincere best wishes for a much better New Year. And, keep posting...I know that there were some great pick ups this past year and can't wait to see some more of them.

My favorite was my Mariano Rivera last out ball for save #380 from Opening Day 2006. This ball was lined back to Mo for the save:

Awesome Baker bat. The history just oozes out of such bats.

Here's some lumber I picked up this year along with a Yankee stadium sign, a Stan Musial HOF invitation and a 1907 baseball mug which I always wanted.

Everything you picked up is very impressive. Really nice Simmons bat: love the wide grain, the "stripes."

Super cool sign but I’m not sure you can call it a Yankee Stadium sign....more like a sign associated with Yankee Stadium. Very cool, whatever the case.

2020 was an exceptionally difficult year in many ways.

From a collecting standpoint, I do think being home meant more time and money spent on the hobby than in previous years

There were quite a few highlights, but here are a couple. My collecting focuses are Integration (and related items), lineup cards and WWII related baseball items. I did really well on the first 2 this year.

1) 1945 Kansas City Royals vs Feller All-Stars. Paige vs Feller. They only played a couple of games in 1945 and programs are exceedingly rare. This game featured Jackie Robinson in the lineup 3 weeks before he signed with the Dodgers

2) 1946 Paige All-Stars team signed sheet. Features Paige and fellow HOF Hilton Smith along with other greats including Frank Duncan, Barney Brown, Quincy Trouppe etc.

3) 1937 World Seris Game 2 lineup cards. Yanks featured HOF's Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dickey, Lazzeri and Ruffing along with HOF manager Joe McCarthy (who signed the bottom). The NY Giants featured HOF Mel Ott, and HOF manager Bill Terry who signed the Giants lineup card. It's the oldest WS lineup card I have ever seen.

Great stuff everyone! 2020 was obviously a rough year but we all still have a lot to be thankful for and for me sports memorabilia was no different. These are pieces I've always admired as a Reds collector and I was fortunate enough to add both this year. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
