Those promo nodders are amazing!

Just a heads-up that a new TSOG episode just went live….
Bobbleheads!!!

We focus on the original 1960s examples, and tried to be as informative as possible. Rob G. probably could’ve done it a lot better, but feel free too give it a look anyway!

Thanks!

No way. I’m not made for the camera, like you and Bart.

Great Video Mark! Very educational. Learned my gold base Cardinal and Red are from the late 60s.

They sure are... would love to see them both, if you can post a pic.

Thanks so much for watching!

Each have their imperfections, but I’m proud of the little collection. The Giants one is probably in the best shape

Its interesting how overtime the body of the nodder can be in excellent shape, but the lettering on the chest or base decides to just fade away. Assuming it has to do with the adhesive they used back then.

Those are beauties! Yup, it's funny how some of the decals held up better than others. Some stayed clear, some toned just a bit, and some turned a legitimate brown color.

Great collection.... thanks for posting!

Even though they’re the last of the vintage dolls, the gold bases are the hardest to find in really good condition. Even in the late 1960’s, the quality of things was deteriorating.

Interesting. Why do you think that is? Inferior paints and adhesives used compared to the previous models?

I’ve put your question to an expert. Stay tuned. It’s always just kind of been a universal opinion that quality fell off with the gold bases. There is an expert restorer who won’t even touch them.

Here's what a true nodder expert replied to my (your) question:

"Yes overall the Gold base quality is below the others, there are exceptions but particularly the later runs were rife with problems. I think that they probably had some profit issues and decided to cut costs by reducing quality and using cheaper material. The paints, shellac and decals used all seem to be inferior to the earlier molds."

Tim Hunter was the ultimate Bobbing Head Guru for many years. He literally wrote the book on them. He always said the Gold Base Series was the toughest condition-wise because of what he called "that chippy chippy paint".

So something about the paint and varnish was indeed of lesser quality. Amazing that any of these survived in NRMT-MINT condition. They were marketed to kids and were just "asking" to be broken.

Great little collection. I find it odd that certain teams (like my Giants) never used the body with the poked out elbow. I’ve said it before….I’d love to talk to an 80+ year old who worked in the nodder factory.

Nice collection, I'm disappointed the Cardinals have never done Curt Flood or Bill White bobbleheads, at least I haven't seen any for sale.
