Default 1952 Bowman

I was just looking through my old Bowman cards and enjoying the art work. The 52B's are interesting especially because of how serious those guys were. A lot of grim faces in that set.

If you were a major league ballplayer and were being paid peanuts for the use of your image by the main gumcard company, you would frown, as well.
I loved the '52 Bowmans, the first set I avidly collected as a kid.

Love that Schoendienst. One of the few from the set that I own.

I am a Schoendienst fan from all the way back when he coached the Cardinals. I had to include that card in the pic, since it is the first 52B I owned. I picked it up years ago from a fellow board member, at a card show in Orland Park IL.

I see your Mays and your Schoendienst, but let's talk about that Smoky Burgess! One of those guys who was really well-regarded at the time and had a lot of staying power, but doesn't even really reach semi-star status for today's collectors. I've attached a screenshot of the writeup I did as part of a project I'm working on related to the 1965 Topps set. Cool ballplayer, I enjoyed learning about him!

Smoky was a terrific pinch hitter in the latter years of his career. If his team was in a tight game in the late innings and had a runner on base, Danny Murtaugh would look down his bench at no one other than Burgess because he knew that Smoky would smoke a line drive down a baseline to get that guy home.

I'll say it every time somebody mentions 52 bowman. Best color in any set ever released.
