Default Anybody get PM for cards for sale from "1" post members

I posted a LTB for cards in the BST. I received a PM from mantlecollector283 indicating his step dad has what I'm looking for. Email address for step dad is santoxalex3@gmail.com

Has anybody else received messages from this poster in the BST in response to LTB posts?

The "email X relative that has what you need" from randoms are 100% always scams.

Adding to a Mantle username to the scam is a nice touch.

I had 2 PM's about that scammer and he/she/it was banned a few hours, or so, ago.

Probably has an OnlyFans page that has nothing but fetish pictures of his feet with incredible cards strategically held between his toes.

Sorry Leon, I was going to let you know, but I was just curious to see how many others were contacted by this person. It gives a little perspective on how hard these people work to do what they do.

I was almost going to email his "step dad" to see what he had available. Then post it in the main forum to see if the card(s) belonged to anybody on the board.

Just FYI, I got propositioned by brandonzinke38 and romerodaniel019011. They both apparently have relatives who have the card I want.

I have gotten the exact same message from 3 "different" members claiming his dad has an Aug 1914 Baseball Magazine issue for said and to email him. One was Sunday and two came today

The 3 "members" are:

randyhodinkee
mantlecollector283 (banned)
lucaslucerne (banned)

the message of all three is:
"Hi there, my old man ave this available for in good condition willersphilip@gmail.com reach out to him for more information
Thanks...

This is the same person that sent me the PM that was the reason for starting this thread. Here it is a few hours later and the following N54 ID sent a PM using the same santoxalex3@gmail.com email address as was used in the earlier PM (for starting this thread). The new ID is "randyhodinkee". Too bad there wasn't a way to filter the use of PMs to only people with at least 10 posts (maybe more).

While annoying for sure, at least these scammers aren't at all good at what they're trying to do. Amateur hour at its finest (worst?).

Each time I have posted an LTB on the 50s board, I have gotten similar messages. Leon takes care of it quickly when reported.

So, thanks Leon and I am LTB centered 52 Durocher and Shuba.

I am getting this as well in response to my WTB posting.
As recently as yesterday. I think this is the 3rd one.
Just an FYI. I ignore them.

On a side note, I really appreciate this community and love the BST section for access to pre-war and vintage. Don't get to many Shows these days.

At least they're trying to get more creative...it was always their "uncle" but now sometimes their "stepdad" or "Facebook mate"!

I like to mess with them. Tell them that if they can post a coined pic of the card I’m looking for on my thread for all to see I’ll pay their old man, or Facebook mate, or uncle 3x the value and also give them a $1000 finders fee. They always respond very quickly asking if I’m serious and begging me to reach out to the email they provide but they’re never able to post a photo. Strange.

You'd think as much as this is discussed on the board they'd come up with something different, other than the same old "My (insert relative) has this is good condition" line.

"these scammers aren't at all good at what they're trying to do. Amateur hour at its finest (worst?)"

Freakonomics (or a similar book) has made the point that the "scammers" (think Nigerian princes) don't want to waste time dealing with 99.9% of their targets who are unlikely to fall for the scam. Wording their appeals the way they do is one of the screens they use to quickly isolate the targets that are dumb/old/etc. enough to actually put their money where the scammer can steal it. The scammers are much wiser than their wording makes them appear to be.

I would rather overestimate an idiot's abilities than underestimate a scammer's capabilities.
