Baltimore Orioles Bobbleheads
Day 331 26 November 2024
Today I am showing you a few more of my bobbleheads featuring the different mascots, Cal Ripken, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and others. Youll notice some of the vintage ones from the 1960s and early 1970s. Too many to list. I have some other Bobbleheads of current Orioles. If questions, let me know. |

Brooks Robinson PSA Basic Set
Day 332 27 November 2024
Today I am showing you my Brooks Robinson Basic Set on the PSA Set Registry. This set is rated 3d highest. There are 24 cards in the basic set. 22 of the cards are the Topps base card and the 1960 Leaf and 1963 Fleer. 10 of the cards are tied as highest graded. The 1957, 1958, and 1971 are PSA 8.5s. I would like to have a PSA 9 of each, but it is cost prohibitive. 5 of the 24 cards are PSA 10s I am hopeful to find a PSA 10 for the 1973 and 1976. I am looking for a PSA 9 1960 Leaf. The set averages a PSA 9 and the quality score is PSA 9.313. The 1st and 2nd set on the PSA Brooks Robinson Basic Set Registry is graded at a whopping 10.32 and 10.08, respectively. |

Brooks Robinson Topps Venezuelan Cards
Day 333 28 November 2024 HAPPY THANKSGIVING! 🦃🍁🍽
Today I am showing you my Venezuelan cards part of my Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set. Within the set there are 10 different Topps Venezuelan cards to include 3 Topps Orioles Team Cards. The 1962 and 1967 Topps Venezuelan Cards are tied as highest graded. They are both in impeccable shape given how these cards were handled and stored back in the day. The 1960 is a lower grade but there are only 2 graded higher. The 1968 Teams Card has Devil Rays on the label for some odd reason; there is only 1 card graded higher. The Topps Venezuelan Cards appeared in 1959, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966, and 1968. The Venezuelan Cards are darker, rougher, and less glossy than the USA version. In some instances you will see a trademark or not. The 1960 cards are hardest to distinguish. The 1964 cards are black on the back and cut smaller. The 1966 Venezuelan card back is orange and cut smaller while the USA version is pinkish. The 1967 Venezuelan Cards have a different back and does not depict the player information with statistics. The 1968 Venezuelan version has a different colored back (orange) than the USA version (yellow). Not all the cards printed in the USA run are represented in the Venezuelan run. Brooks Robinson appeared in all years except the 1959 version. The 1972 Venezuelan Stamp is a PSA 1. There are only 7 total graded and 3 are graded higher. My understanding these are often duplicated / counterfeited. A lot of serious collectors will pursue the Venezuelan Topps Cards but beware, they are hard to find, expensive and often times damaged with rounded corners, paper loss and damaged on the back from being glued in a book. |

1969 Globe Import - Brooks Robinson
Day 334 29 November 2024
Today I am showing you my PSA graded Brooks Robinson 1969 Globe Imports Playing Cards. The 1969 Blank Back Globe Import is easy to find and very inexpensive. There are 3 graded higher than the PSA 9 I am showing. The 1969 Globe Imports Playing Cards Hearts-Checkerboard Card is very rare. There are 3 graded out there with 1 higher. The checkerboard card was very hard to find and came at a silly cost had to have it to complete my set! There are 55 cards in the blank back set. |

I never knew there was a checkerboard version of the 69 Globe till you told me about it. Really like the Brooksie items that are the oddball types of things that you dont see very often. In this case I had never seen one of the checkerboard before for any player.

Mark, I knew very little about it till I was asked if interested in one. Before I answered the guy sold it to another collector. Took me a year to meet someone that had mine at PSA and he was happy to sell it to me. I later helped him find a card or two. It is a tough one. I believe most of the other cards in the set have this same back variation. The bigger stars go for a fortune.

Brooks Robinson Deckle Edge Cards
Day 335 30 November 2024
Another odd ball item found in the Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set are the Deckle Edge Cards. The Deckle Edge Cards from Topps appeared in 1969 and 1974. The 1969 Topps Deckle Edge Set consists of 33 cards. They were inserted in the 1969 regular issue card packs. The card is black and white with the likeness of the player and a blue facsimile signature. On the back the player name appears with a number in a small rectangle. There are two variations with Jim Wynn/Hoyt Wilhelm and Joe Foy/Rusty Staub. The Brooks is #1 in the set of 33. My Brooks copy is a PSA 7; I am always looking for a higher graded copy. I also have the proof. Also, in 1969 you could find a O-Pee-Chee version that only included 24 players with a black signature and blank back. I have a PSA 8 for the O-Pee-Chee version. The 1974 version of the Deckle Edge included 72 cards with a photo of the player and a facsimile signature with a white or gray back that included details about the player. The card is larger measuring 2 7/8 inches X 5 inches. The white back is harder to find. Today, I am showing you PSA 8 Grayback and PSA 9 Whiteback along with a Grayback Proof. I would love to collect the Deckle Edge set but the cards are hard to find and very expensive. |

While typically the white backs are harder to locate Im sure there are a handful of proofs still out there.

Day 336 1 December 2024
Like yesterday, today I am showing another odd ball set that featured Brooks Robinson. In 1968, 1969 and 1972. The 1968 Milton Bradley Set included 132 cards in a board game. The cards are a brighter color on the back. The card is very similar to the 1968 Topps Set. My version is graded a PSA 7. In 1969 Milton Bradley had another baseball game that featured MLB players. The board game included 296 unnumbered cards. The card is 2 in x 3 in. The 1969 card is a PSA 8 (tied highest graded). The 1972 set includes 402 cards. The photos are the same in the 1969 and 1972 sets, but have different values in the game on the back. The 1972 card is a PSA 6 with one graded higher. |
#4364
|
|||
|
|||
A easy way to tell the Milton Bradley’s apart is the 1972 cards have a “base” on the bottoms of the Red number 1s on the back of card and the 1969 doesn’t.

1965 Topps Transfers
Day 337 2 December 2024
Todays oddball set is the Topps 1965 Transfers. I have never seen one put to use but understand they were iron ons. This set includes 72 different transfers of players. This transfer was an insert to the 1965 baseball card wax pack. The transfer measures 2 in x 3 in. I find the transfers to be hard to identify the players. Numbers HoFers were included in the set to include Brooks Robinson who is shown below with the rest of the set. The PSA 8 is part of my Brooks Master set and is highest graded. |

Day 338 3 December 2024
Todays odd ball set is the 1965 Topps Embossed set. This set included 72 players; 36 from each league. The AL was in blue and the NL in red. The card has a raised profile and gold foil easily scratched. The card was inserted in the wax pack. The card measured 2 1/8 in x 3 ½ in. The card was the same height as the card but not quite as wide. Many HoFers appear in the set to include Brooks Robinson included below with the rest of the set. The PSA 8 is part of my Brooks Master set; there are 3 graded higher. |

Brooks Robinson 1968 Atlantic Oil Sets
Day 339 4 December 2024
Todays odd ball set is the 1968 Atlantic Oil Play Ball Contest Cards. The cards were issued in two-card panels, where were split or torn apart to become a standard size card. The card came in two versions; Game Rules on Back and Play Ball Back. Some players would include a prize of money ($5, $10 and up to $2,500) depicted on the back, which I have not seen. Bill Freehan apparently was the $2,500 card. The AL included a red card and the NL on a blue card; 25 each. The cards are hard to find high graded due to the perforation. I have both sets minus the George Scott Rules on Back. I have looked for this card for years. Below is the Red AL sets minus Scott Rules Back and Blue NL sets. My PSA 6 Rules on Back of Brooks is graded pretty high with 3 graded higher; the Play Ball Back PSA 3 appears to be low graded but there are only 5 graded higher. |

You're right, this is a very challenging set for condition. You know me. I like variations. The set actually comes with variations for both backs. The names on the front are either black or gray. I've shown the Brooks cards as examples. Putting together my Orioles set, I didn't notice either color to be harder than the other. 1968 Atlantic Oil Play Ball Game #1 - Copy.JPG The Boog Powell has an additional variation. The Powell with the gray name is cropped differently on front. Less sky at the top. 1968 Atlantic Oil Play Ball Game #2 - Copy.JPG Lastly, Andy Etchebarren of the Orioles was one of the winner cards ($5). I've never seen one, but have heard a few are out there. |

Day 340 5 December 2024
Todays odd ball set is the 1966 Topps Rub Offs. This set includes 120 cards consisting of 100 players and 20 team pennants. Each card measures 2 1/16 in x 3 in. The card reflects the players headshot in color with his name, position and team. The set includes plenty of HoFers including Brooks. I am showing the set along with my highest graded PSA 10 Brooks card that goes with my PSA Master Set of Brooks Robinson. |

Day 341 6 December 2024
Todays odd ball set is the 1964 Wheaties Stamp. The set includes 50 players that mostly appeared in the 1963 All Star game. Some did not appear in the game while others appearing in the game are not featured in the set. Many (44) of the cards match the 1963 Topps Card. The stamps could be affixed in an album. The album included a blank slot for the stamp and a brief biography of the player. The stamp measures 2 9/16 in x 2 Ύ in. To receive the stamp you would send 50 cents with a Wheaties Box Top to General Mills. The players appear individually or on a 9 player panel. Below includes my album, envelope the album was received in, the stamp set, my PSA 9 Brooks Robinson Stamp and PSA 2 Panel. |

1964 Topps Stand Up Set
Day 342 7 December 2024
Todays odd ball set is one of my favorites. The 1964 Topps Stand Up set includes 77 player cards measuring 2 ½ in x 3 ½ in. The blank backed and unnumbered cards were the first since All Star sets of 1951 to be die-cut. Each card features a full action pose of a player set against a yellow and green background (top half yellow and bearing folding instructions; when the figure is punched out and stood upright). 22 of the players were single printed making them more difficult to find. Carl Yastrzemski was the most difficult to find for me. Below, I am showing you my complete set along with my highest graded PSA 9 Brooks Robinson belonging to my PSA Master Set. Dontforget today marks the 83d anniversary of the horrible attack on Pearl Harbor where we lost so many brave men and women. |

Brooks Robinson 4.25 X 5.5 Inch Photo Hard Stock
Hi, everyone. Picked this up recently. I think it is a smaller version of a 1960s team issue photo. This one is 4.25x5.5 inches. The Orioles would make smaller versions of the larger photos. Anyone familiar or have details? When the Orioles did this, did they do it for all the photos and could there be a checklist. Talked to a couple of the smarter Orioles collectors and have some insights. Let me know. I really like this one and believe it is rare.

1954 Baltimore Orioles Team Issue Set
Day 343 8 December 2024
I am a huge fan of Baltimore Orioles team issued post cards and photos. A couple years ago I found the 1954 Team Issue base set 6 in X 9 in photos. This set includes 25 players. Later, I realized there was an update set that included 8 players. This set included Cal Abrams, Jim Brideweser, Bob Chakales, Clint Courtney, Jim Fridley, Ray Murray, Billy ODell and Eddie Waitkus. I have looked almost daily for these and always do the same at shows. Recently on Ebay, I found an auction with 21 older photos and put a bid in and forgot about it and won. I did not really look to hard until it arrived in the mail. I then realized it was from 1954. I looked at the photos with my check list and slowly realized one by one, I stumbled on the 8 player update set. I was very excited to check each one off. The best part of this discovery is I paid $8.99 plus $8.00 shipping for the 8 player update set and 13 of the 25 players in the base set. Included is a photo of the 8 player update set. |

Great pickup. You got those update photos for a steal. They are extremely hard to find. FYI - Over the years, I've seen a bunch of the original sets being offered with only 24 photos. At first, I thought they probably lost one of the photos along the way, but then I began to notice that the sets were always missing the Vic Wertz photo. Wertz was traded by the Orioles in June. I have no proof, but have wondered if the Orioles removed the Wertz photo after the trade, making the Wertz a bit harder to find. Would love to know for sure.... |

Baltimore Orioles - Dave McNally
Day 344 9 December 2024
As a kid my favorite left handed pitcher for the Orioles was Dave McNally. The two time WS champion would win 184 games over 14 years (all but one with the Orioles). He would win 20 plus games 4 straight years to include 1971 with 3 other orioles. I was a sad camper when he went to Montreal in 1975. Today, I am showing you a few of my favorite McNally items. At top is a ball signed by the four Oriole 20 game winners in 1971 (McNally, Cuellar, Dobson and Palmer). To the right is his aisle marker from Memorial Stadium. His rookie card from 1963 is next to it. I then show a 1971 Milk Duds Box, 1969 Transogram Box, an album from 1972 with a brilliant photo of him purposefully blurry. I was lucky to find a 1962 debut game for McNally. I am showing you the highest graded (PSA 7) Hand Cut McNally 1970 Action Cartridge. The other photo shows some other items to include him on the 1967 Pocket Schedule, 1971 Bazooka Numbered Hand Cut Card, the 1970 Orioles Champions Orange Card, his 1970 Traffic Safety Card, 1970 Carl Aldana Orioles Card and 1971 Bazooka Complete Box. I have so many more items to show but that will be it for today. After baseball, he returned to his hometown in Montana where he sold cars. McNally is one of the best Oriole pitchers of all time and died fairly young of cancer in 2002 at the age of 60. |

1960 Baltimore Orioles Jersey #7
Day 345 10 December 2024
For the next few days I will show you some Game Used items. Today, I am showing you my 1960 Baltimore Orioles Jerry Adair Game Worn Jersey. The flannel jersey has Baltimore and #7 across the chest and on the back his #7. On the front, you see the Spalding Tag and the tag 60 7 42. I am not an expert and plenty of you are, but I assume the 60 is the year (1960), 7 is for the #7, and 42 is the size. I really like the bright orange lettering, zipper and Hartzell bird on the left shoulder. I am found this jersey to be affordable and wanted to have one for display. I also thought to share his Topps card from 1960 that shows the uniform; not suggesting this is photo matched but it serves as an example on what was worn around the same time. |

I was a big Dave McNally fan as a kid. Here's a program from his first professional season in 1961, the Victoria/Ardmore Rosebuds. He only pitched in 4 games, before moving up to Fox Cities. The Rosebuds started the season in Victoria, TX. At the end of May, the team moved to Ardmore, OK. Anything from this team is hard to find. 1961 Ardmore Rosebuds program 1961 Ardmore Rosebuds.JPG I would love to find a home program from the Victoria Rosebuds, but no luck so far. I do have an away program from Amarillo, TX (the last series they played as the Victoria Rosebuds at the end of May). Very nice jersey. You're correct about the tagging. I'm not sure if you can verify for sure, but the jersey might have also been worn by Jackie Brandt. He wore #7 in 1960, before changing to #25. Jerry Adair did wear #7 in 1960, but only played a few games that year. The card is from the 1961 Topps set. It's nice when jerseys have the name on back. Years ago, I picked up an example from the 1961 season. My best guess is that it was worn by John Papa or Jim Lehew. Neither player is an Orioles household name, but glad to have an example for my collection. 1961 JerseyRoad Grey #39 (John Papa) A - Copy.JPG 1961 JerseyRoad Grey #39 (John Papa) B - Copy.JPG |

Mark, you can always sell your 401K or car for a Brooks flannel. Ha.
Nice jersey, Alan. Agree with ya on the 1960 jersey. I think my document from Auction House or in conversation suggested Adair. Gotcha on the 1961 Topps Card. Thought to share that one to show the similarity with the jersey and he did not appear on a 1960 card. The jerseys did evolve and change routinely in the early 1960s. I painfully put the 1960 and 1961 Topps Sets together so very familiar. |

Day 346 11 December 2024
Today I am showing you a few more game used items. Today, I will feature Brooks Robinson items. First, I have two bats that belonged to Brooks Robinson, which are authenticated. The darker of the two bats is a Game Used 1977 Hillerich & Bradsby Model S44. This bat shows some use but it is not cracked. The other bat is from 1965-1968. This bat is also a Hillerich & Bradsby Model but a MC44. This bat has a lot of use. It is cracked. It has #5 on the knob. It is signed. The next item is a game worn hat by Brooks circa 1976. My final game used item is from 1977. The jersey was worn in 1977 at home. It is tagged Set 1, 1977. I am showing the back and front. It is a size 42. The jersey is signed. |

Rob, each card in a set receives a weight. The theory is a card that is super rare with a low population gets a higher weight than a card that is not so rare. If a collector on the registry has the highest graded card he gets additional points. You have your weighted score which is the grade of the card x the weight. Simple math. Then you get bonus points for having the highest graded card. Collectors into the registry with a lot of money strive to find the highest graded cards. Make sense?
