Default How Does SGC Handle MC Cards?

Posted By: Addie_Joss

I have a PSA graded card with the Miscut qualifier annoying attached to it. It is not a major miscut that makes the card look strange, just slightly miscut at the top. It in no way affects the image or registration of the card. Currently the card is graded a 6, I was wondering how SGC handles cards that have been miscut. Is there a significant downgrade or does it depend on the degree of the miscut?

SGC grades the cards as is. So you will likely have a pretty decent drop with a qualifier. Depending on how severe I have seen cards drop 1-3 grades. If you post a scan , there are many SGC regulars on the board who can take an educated guess as to what it will crossover to. I would imagine, at a minimum, if you submit the card in a MC PSA holder, it will drop one grade. You might want to crack it out and then submit it.

Any significant miscut seems to be capped at a 2/30 from SGC.

Please don't draw any conclusions from this lone example. The only experience I've had submitting a PSA MC was this Lajoie. I sent it to SGC in a PSA 2(MC) holder and it came back as an SGC 30/2. The improvement was pretty much unexpected, though I must say that I thought the MC qualifier was a little harsh.

SGC is much more tolerant on centering than PSA. Each grading company has their quirks. SGC is tougher on chipping, minor paper loss, wrinkles, etc.

My Gehrig is damn near perfect. Centering and miscut... so SGC graded it accordingly.

Mine looks almost exactly like the Lajoie card posted. Just a little extra room on the bottom and a little less room on the top. Even if I ended up with a 5 instead of a 6 MC I'd be happy. I still have 2 Diamond Stars graded 8 OC's that I want to cross over to SGC. I'm hoping they remain 8's. Any advice on how to go about cracking a PSA case open without damaging the card? I'd make its own thread but I'm sure its been asked time and time again.

Despite having almost my entire T206 set registered to PSA, My personal opinion is that SGC is the more accurate and more reasonable grader of the two. I think they are harsher on 'real' flaws with cards, but much more reasonable with mild MCs. I find this especially true with issues that have a very high percentage of MC and OCs (like AB for T206/T205).

Regards,
Scott
